I love mine. But the screen glass is awful. I already have a tiny scratch/crack I can run a nail across and feel. Maybe 1/8 long and just enough to be annoying when I see it. It’s in a case and never dropped so I have no idea where it came from. But very disappointing.
I noticed that with the 13 pro. Most of the display models I’ve seen recently had extremely scratched up screen glass. I don’t normally use a screen protector but opted for one this time because of how easily it seems they scratch.

100% agree. The size of the Pro Max isn't so bad. The battery life is insane and you get used to it. Honestly, it's worth it. Hopefully, you will be ordering iPhone 15 Pro Max or Ultra in Silver on September 2023. :p
I’m not sure I will. I have three years of payments Verizon is giving me for the $800 trade in value of an iPhone 11 Pro, and I won’t be able to get sort of “upgrade” deal until three years from now.

The only thing that could realistically happen is if I sell the 14 pro, and buy a 15pro outright full retail.

Won’t say it won’t happen 😆 but I really don’t think I will.

Apple in September released the iPhone 14 models, so it's been three months since launch. MacRumors videographer Dan Barbera has been using the iPhone 14 Pro Max as his main phone since it came out, and he has some long term usage thoughts to share with those still undecided about upgrading.

In terms of durability, the iPhone 14 Pro Max is holding up well, even through several drops. There is a deep scratch on the display, but that tends to happen with no case. The stainless steel coating in black is prone to scratching, but it seems to be more durable than the coating on the 13 Pro Max.

Always on display and the Dynamic Island are nice features to have, especially with iOS 16.2 updates that let you hide wallpaper. Dynamic Island isn't being taken advantage of well as of yet, but Live Activities are still new and haven't been widely adopted by third-party apps.

The 48-megapixel upgrade to the Main camera on the iPhone 14 Pro models makes a major difference in quality, but it's not something that's for day to day use because of the file sizes. The sensor upgrade does bring improvements to all photos, and the new 4K 24fps option for Cinematic Mode results in great videos.

If you're still unsure about upgrading, it's well worth the purchase if you're coming from an iPhone 11 or older, but it's not really worth going for one of the standard 14 models over the Pro models just because of the huge number of features Apple made exclusive to the 14 Pro and Pro Max. To see all of Dan's thoughts on Apple's latest flagship, make sure to watch the video up above.

Great, very useful review, Thank you! What about the speakers? Is there any difference between the 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max?

Funny I traded my 13 pro max in yesterday with 90%, I dunno how you have horrible battery life with 99% battery capacity
I was saying the IPhone 14 Pro Max is already lower (actually at 97% and I just got it in Sept) whereas my iPhone 13 Pro Max was still at 99% when I traded it in after a years worth of use.

Same here, I get 6H SOT with 14PM if lucky. So tired of setting up phone as new, trying betas, going back to official release, all to end up with the same 10% drain per hour / 1% down every few minutes regardless of using or not using the phone.

On low brightness, notifications on for a handful of apps, background refresh off, haptic typing off, AOD off, reduce motion on, using LTE not 5G. I have crippled this phone back to the 6S era essentially and it still sucks battery. Either I have a lemon or iOS 16 is screwed up
Do you shoot 48 Mpixel ProRAWs? Processing thse images, which can take hours, DOES drain the battery in the background a LOT on my iP14PM.

I love it when people mention that their screen is all scratched and then say they didn't use a screen protector. THEN WHY DIDN'T YOU USE A SCREEN PROTECTOR?!?! Guess what? If you don't use one, it's going to scratch. Spend $5 and keep your $1500 phone looking pristine.

Using MagSafe on both? I used MagSafe on my 12PM, and it dropped the battery health down to 92% in less than a year. I stopped using it and it stayed at 92% for over a year until I upgraded. Not using MagSafe on my 14PM.

Way , way too heavy. I got rid of my iPhone 11 Pro Max as that too was too heavy and the 14 Pro
Max is even heavier. A true Porker class phone !
Also, the screen scratch resistance of iPhones is dire. Really dire. Have now started using a screen protector on my 13 pro and that so far has yielded so few hairline scratches compared to the 11 Pro max I had prior with no screen protector.
Also… the cost increase in Europe. Not good. When you can get a Pixel 7 Pro for so much less I really have to question how much longer I will stick with Apple. Or will just keep my 13 Pro for a while longer yet I expect.

I have owned a 2022 iPhone SE for about seven months and I've never, ever had a phone scratch this easily. My screen is covered in hairline scratches. Covered! Never have my keys in the same pocket and I also don't live at the beach either (sand). I thought maybe this was just cheap glass on the SE but it sounds it's a universal issue.

You shouldn't have to be putting a $5 screen protector on a $1500 phone. Sure, it will scratch eventually, but it shouldn't be scratching as easily as the other poster said.

I've seen some folks talk about the newer glass being shatter resistant, but that in turn makes the glass easier to scratch. If I didn't know any better, I'd think we were using plastic screens.

Glass is glass. Glass will scratch. Put a $5 protector on and never worry about it. I don't understand why someone wouldn't do this.

my 0.02¢ - I'm 65 and grew up with rotary dial telephones, so I laugh at those who say the 14 Pro Max is "heavy"! But seriously, the 14 Pro Max was an upgrade for me from the iPhone 11 standard phone. I'm blown away by this phone and don't foresee upgrading for a long, long time.

Always people crapping on products like this. people are never happy unless they cry about it. This is one of apple's best phones today. I am not be paying apple 15 prices next year. Since many people RENT their phones on a yearly trade-in, it hardly counts. I pay for my iPhones, use them for years, and buy new ones. renting yearly in apple trade-in or trading-in other ways...... doesn't give any more credence to people who believe how bad the apple 14 ProMax is. I buy the 2025 model.

All glass isn't created equal. You can have hard glass that shatters or soft glass that scratches. Unfortunately, you only get to pick one.

I can’t say I love my iPhone 14 Pro. It’s legitimately the most troublesome iPhone experience I’ve ever had and I really do wish I would not have upgraded.

I have to restart the cell/Wi-Fi signals ~1x/day minimum. Activating it with Verizon when I upgraded was also not smooth.

5G connectivity has been so bad that I actually turned it off completely.

Lastly, I actually find the hole to be obstructing. I feel that had I chosen a Max I likely would feel different.

It takes wonderful pictures and the screen is nice. But all the other stuff frankly have made owning this phone a frustrating experience

I kinda like the 14 PM.. but the forced e-sim ONLY ( US ) has me holding on to the 13PM...

Was looking to upgrade for additional storage and better camera, but there's no way I'm going e-sim only when I switch devices ( iOS <-> Android ) frequently!
I imported a 14 PM from Canada. It is dual sim so I can switch devices very easily

How much does your wrist hurt?

It’s h e a v y
My last phones have been:

iPhone SE (original, with 4” screen)
iPhone XR
iPhone 13 Mini
iPhone Pro Max

I switched from a 13 Mini to a Pro Max 4 days ago. Despite loving the Mini and other smaller phones, I’ll say the Pro Max isn’t heavy. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I loved my Mini, but the Pro Max has been incredible. It’s my first “Max” (large) phone.

Unless it’s sapphire or diamond, any glass will scratch if it comes into contact with a set of keys, a grain of sand in your pocket, etc.. Despite what some in this thread might claim, glass does not scratch itself. It can all be easily prevented with a $5 screen protector. They are super easy to install these days with the installation tools that they come with, so there’s no reason not to install one as soon as you unbox the phone, and always have a perfect screen.

Just to add: Casio never used sapphire on their G-Shocks (until the MR-G and some of their metal Squares) because they’d crack easier than the glass they choose to use.

Sapphire won’t scratch but shatters easier, while their glass scratches easier, but doesn’t shatter as often through vibration, or if the watch (or glass) is struck. The $3000 fashion models get sapphire, but all the regular watches get glass.

Five bucks? I got the Belkin one, and while not expensive, they’re definitely more than $5.

I usually go for Belkin, but my last one was a Spigen with the included plastic application frame to allow for perfect installation. I think I like the feel of the Belkin one more, so I switched back.

But we’re really splitting hairs, here. They’re both glass, and probably both excellent. 😂

Agreed. I have the 14Pro and gave my wife my 11Pro. I'm used to the weight, but it always feels awkward and clumsy. Whenever I pick up my wife's (my former) 11pro with it's thinner camera bump and lighter weight, I definitely miss it. That's said, those 48 megapixels are great to have when you need 'em.

There are plenty on Amazon that are $10 for a two pack that will do the job. LK is a pretty good one. You can certainly spend more on a Belkin or more fancy one if you want, but the $5 ones work just fine.

Serious question, how do pro max users carry the their phones? Even just around the house but also outside. For me even the 14 regular just doesn’t fit in many pockets, or if it fits for a moment, it falls out suuuuper easily.

Also would be very interested if any pro max (or even 14 or 14 pro) users bicycle or use public transit? I spend just about a week using the 14 regular model and while I enjoyed the larger screen size for several uses like work emails and writing and grading, I am just more prone to drop or fumble the phone since I just can’t transport it easily, and again that applies to being outside home, as much as just being at home from one room to another, in sweats or similar.

I realize there is no standard for "long term", but come on three months? Well I suppose in today's world three months is an eternity.
So true, memory and attention span for so many people is like days or hours or even seconds… wait, what were were talking about? 🤔

I’d rather scratch my screen. Those screen protectors are awful.
