The overall footprint and weight of the 2017 13" are right in-between the M4 13" and 15". Go a little bigger and get the 15" or go a little smaller and get the 13"?
Since you mentioned it'd just be around the house 99% of the time, I'd say the bigger one, make media consumption more enjoyable.
My favorite Macbook size was my 12" in 2007, however. Portable enough to take most places. And back then, the drives, memory and battery were all user replaceable, too! But I kept a monitor and stuff to plug into when I got home. You probably don't do that.

Apple desperately needs a new Snow Leopard and they also should stop releasing a major OS change every single year.

I honestly have a lot less day to issues with macOS now then I did back then

and for me each os release becomes "snappier" and more responsive in most ways

not saying there aren't annoyances or things that could work better

I do wish they would settle on how Time Machine and apfs are going to work and stop arbitrarily ****ing around with them every year

same goes for pmset

but I'd say it's actually in a better state for my day to day uses than snow leopard was

I also neither care about, nor need, a major os update each year with features I'll never use

the last headline feature I remember being even slightly interested in was dark mode, cuz it looked cool, but turns out it was actually harder on my eyes!

the only major change that sticks in my mind was when they got rid of "back to my Mac." that was definitely a downgrade but I've since improved my networking skills and have Tailscale on my router at home so it doesn't matter to me anymore. was definitely a great feature that got erased though

To be fair, snow leapord was really crappy at launch and it was only 10.6.8 which is considered the most stable and robust version

Unfortunately, shareholders wont allow anything less than a yearly update schedule. It is hard to describe how massive apple has gotten. They are no longer a computer or software or whatever company- they are a share price. Their product is $AAPL. Everybody's 401k/IRA/account/etc relies on it to go up.

I recently had M2 and M4 MacBook Air side by side - same specs 16GB RAM and 512 SSD. Both Midnight.

What surprised me most is that the M4 display looks much sharper.
M4 midnight color looks different and less prone to finger prints.
And M4 feels quite faster than M2.
Dammit, might have to trade in soon. My M2 Air is coming up on 3 years old.

Really! You can upgrade both at the time of purchase.
ok … i give up on the English language. Yesterday, i learned from the Apple glasses article that “camera” is now a synonym for “sensor”. And now i learn that “upgrade” is a synonym for “configure” … 😊

Yeah, the English language can be confusing if it’s not your primary language. It’s a mess 😂

The reviewer isn't enthusiastic about the speakers. How do owners feel about the speakers?

Have you been able to compare them to the M4 Pro?
