Speaking of syncing tabs between devices, I wonder if they increase the limits of iCloud syncing bookmarks?

iOS 14 is

Bookmarks

  • Total number of bookmarks: 25,000
  • Maximum size of a bookmark: 4KB
  • Maximum size of all bookmarks: 24MB
who in there right mind would need 25k of bookmarks even across multiple devices

What a snooze fest. I love my new iPad Pro; but man, underwhelming. If I was upgrading from a 2018 or newer; I would regret it. The 10.5 upgrade was a large jump in design and accessories; but for those with a 2018.. why bother? And a whole year for.... widgets? Really? That's what you spent a year working on? Something that was shockingly missing from last years release.. what a damn shame.
Yup. Bought an M1 the weekend they came out and tried it out for a week. None of my editing apps ran any faster or smoother on it than my 2018. When I started hearing strong rumors that iPados 15 was going to be the snorefest it turned out to be I took it back. How do you build something with so much power and then just kneecap it with godawful OS restrictions?

I’m running iPadOS 15 on my iPad Pro 10.5 and 2018 12.9. Runs great on both. Surprisingly stable. With that said, I’m so glad I opted for the M1 MacBook Air instead of trading my 2018 12.9 iPad Pro. I already have the Magic Keyboard and Pencil for it so feel like it’s good to go for another year at least.

I’ll probably set up a right hand 2nd Home Screen full of widgets on iPad and leave the main one clear basically giving me a resurrected version of Dashboard!

Agree. The OS itself runs fine on my 2018 Pro, which I use for editing photos between shoots and quick compositions, but because of the restrictions on app size there’s no reason to trade this in for an M1 model, and it certainly won’t be replacing my M1 MBA. I wish it could have as that would be one less thing to travel with, but I guess we aren’t there yet.

I feel like by the time all of these new features are released, I forget about them and accidentally stumble on them over the following year.

Memory for a VM is whatever you assign to it. Windows VM can be using 2 GB, 2.5 GB, 8 GB, or whatever you assign to it and whatever requirements the software needs in it. With 1 or 2 TB of storage, you can have a ton of VMs offline that can range from 10 GB to ~100 GB in the iPad storage and with 16 GB on an iPad you can probably run a few VMs easily at the same time.

just avoid checking anything that says “reserved” when creating your VM 😆
My home lab I use VMWare and Hyper-V. Cheap, slower, single socket (4 core) servers to host them. Yes, multiple instances aren’t a problem as long as your aware of what is powered on and what the potential load is(Plex with multiple 1080p transcoding views going on can cause a load, for example).

The M1 iPad PRO is essentially an M1 MacBook in tablet form

a $2,000+ device hampered by an iPhone Operating Software.

iOS is not cut to do MacOS’s job on the M1 iPad Pros simple as that.

Apple can cater to casual users who just browse and do very light computing with iOS (They are not the demograph to go and buy an iPad PRO line just for that), which is fine, but are not addressing that demograph who may only be a small percentage...actually spend more.

Apple can either start seperating the regular iPad line and iPad PRO line also by the OS’s or be more clear in roadmap intentions.

THIS issue is not going to go away and will only get worse when M2 and M3 iPad PROs roll out with beefier specs, more ram, storage etc...but increasing hardware and software disparity.

M series iPad ”PRO”s are limited by the software
MacOS is limited by the hardware.

The ability to separate all of the running apps so one can combine apps for split view looks nice. Makes me miss the older Expose effect on macOS.
So why not just import MacOS’s Expose?

A lot of things people are requesting are MacOS features and capabilities, and it is evident iOS is not up to the task or often falls short with janky, too many step and work around results.

My hope is that Parallels 17 becomes available and there is no Ram restrictions in iOS 15. Run ARM versions of Windows and Linux on your iPad Pro and take advantage of the 2 TB, the M1, and 16 GB without Apple. That would be a dream setup for me in the year 2022.

Definitelty,

a FUll desktop version of Parallels would solve so many things pro users are asking for, although it will not bring MacOS, it will bring other real Desktop operating System features people have been calling for years.

Casual users who love iOS can still keep using it that way, Parrallels has nothing to do with them.

The problem is Apple.
Even if all the technical issues where ironed out and it was sandboxed would Apple even allow virtualization and emulation?

parallels is still an app, so by definition it will be restricted at 5gb ram, for now .Apple must lift the 5gb ram restriction, not Prallels. Maybe with beta 2. What you will do with windows on arm? there are not so many apps there...is useless...developers didnt jumped on that platform architecture
You have better apps in the ipadOS store

What will people do with a desktop operating system with Windows?

Are you serious?
It’s Windows.

It is far easier to list off what people can NOT do, than listing all the obvious and then some.

”you have better apps in the iPadOS store”

yeah like Final Cut Pro, Logic X, Steam, Full desktop Adobe Premiere etc???

This is beyond just Apps and one App Store, it’s the complete environment where you can install any and FAR more programs that you want from anywhere else you want.

THIS is what I suspect is the reason Apple doesn’t want either MacOS or another desktop OS on the iPad, because they will lose their CONTROL by giving people control to get out of the wall garden and not have to rely on the monopoly App Store.

Apple goes ape s*** when people try and sideload the apps they want and jailbreak iOS devices just to get more functionality out of them.

Craig Federighi expressed Apple’s view on people sideloading on iOS in the Epic vs Apple court case.

"Safari also now prevents trackers from accessing your IP address, and if you have a paid iCloud account, a Private Relay feature will encrypt all of your browsing activity." I like this and will pay the $1.49 / month for the 50 Gb iCloud storage this spring for encrypting my browsing even though I have a VPN active on my Apple and Android devices. I would like to ask a question from those in ITC?: does this service that Apple will be providing prevent my Government from reading my metadata collated by my ISPs?

I feel Quick Notes and ability to place widgets anywhere are the best features of iPadOS 15
