Useles until it can be done via bt or wifi. I don't want to plug my phone in everytime I sit in the car.

Other than that its awesome to see car decks catching up. I have a 2013 toyota 86 GTS and its in car system from toyota is pretty crap... And by that I mean it's the best in car system I've ever used.

People saying why don't you just use your phone etc... Well in my country if you dare touch your phone and get caught you just lost $500.

So every time I need to update the receiver with a new firmware I got to stick a USB in? I think I'll wait for when they add Wi-Fi to these receivers so they can do over the air updates through the iPhone

Agreed.

I lot of this carplay stuff might be a nice addition, but with the price tag and the manual nature of updating. Not quite ready for mass consumption by the average user.

Save $5,000 on the upgrade option and just use your phones screen. What if I don't want to be trapped with iphone for 10 years?

Smart guys car play solution is built in bluetooh or

I actually have one of these and while it is a nice option if you don't have NAV built-in to your car, CarPlay is far more appealing in just how much more it does, the larger display, and controls meant to be used in a car.

Why not just buy a iphone 6 plus, keep it plugged in and use the hey siri feature? Next have the cars hvac system be controlled by Bluetooth. Let's keep it simple.

Because mounting, plugging in, and disconnecting a phone in your car every single time you get in or out is hugely annoying!

That said, until CarPlay works over WiFi/BT (not Lightning) it has the same problem other than you can skip the mount.

Future versions of ios should allow iPhones to go into CarPlay mode on its own and just use the receiver for speakers only. I rather have a receiver with iphone mount built in. were I can pop in my iPhone 6+ and use it as the screen.

Did anyone else notice the other dash features, like this ironic LED clock! Are we back to the future yet?

Album art?

Does anyone know how these car stereos display album art from a USB stick? I'm not impressed with how Apple CarPlay shows album art, and its really hard to find videos that demo how these stereos display art on their own. Anyone know?

I'd rather just mount an ipad mini =/
Okay, put your money where your mouth is, and let's see your integrated design for mounting a mini. All these people saying they'd rather put in an iPad, and yet none of them doing it.

I think the 6+ with the 5.5 inch is the sweet spot and way more civilized than an iPad mini in a dash.

"I'm an Android guy, Android already does that."

^ said the sales rep for Metra Electronics yesterday. I had called to enquire when they will ship their dash kit for 2013 and later Accords (that they announced in January). I said I bet you might be getting a lot of calls about it now that CarPlay is shipping. Silence. "What's CarPlay?" he asked. I explained that it integrates the iPhone with the head unit. To which he replied as above.

They do full on custom installations, but also sell kits that can be mounted by any professional car audio shop, or someone with the skills and know how.

Dash mounts are cheap... Why pay nearly $1000 (device only) for this?

So has anybody updated the 4000nex yet, last time I downloaded the firmware and unzipped it the folder was named 5000nex?

I use a slim-fitting case on my cellular iPad Air. I use a T-Mobile SIM card with 200MB of free data every 30 days. I also use TomTom's USA GPS app, which is incredibly good. When I take a trip of 300 miles, I pay $1.99 for 30 days of traffic updates through TomTom, which needs a data connection. I play music from the iPad through my Bluetooth stereo and, when the TomTom USA GPS app gives directions through the stereo speakers, the music pauses, then resumes after the direction is given. The stereo is the base model that was included in my Scion (Toyota) xB.

In order to mount the iPad Air to my dashboard directly behind my steering wheel, where there are no gauges, I put a couple of velcro circles onto my dashboard and onto the iPad Air's case. The iPad Air is also being supported by the car's steering column for great support. When I need to glance down at the iPad Air to see the GPS instructions, it is as quick and easy as glancing down at a speedometer.

I also use a Lightning cable to keep the iPad Air charged, and so that I can say, "Hey Siri... play U2, or Open TomTom, or Apple stock price, or send a message to, etc." Also, I have controls on my steering wheel to adjust the volume and advance to the next song. So I rarely need to reach up and touch my car stereo, unless it is to answer a phone call, or make a phone call, both of which only requires touching one button.

I am very satisfied with the way that this setup works. Here is what it looks like:

When I move on to the next car, I can take the iPad with me.

How did you get in your car in the first place; teleportation? How lazy can you be? Does your mom blow your nose as well?

A 1 year old child can plug in a lightning connector and get it right 100% of the time.

Or put it on an SD card. So quick and easy.

There is also a problem with the interface opacity totally blanking out the album art when in the music app. The artwork is there, but the opacity is so dark, unless you are right on top of the stereo screen, you can not see it.

Agreed. I had to turn up the brightness and backlight so I could see the art behind. They went for form over function here, I think.

Overall, though, I prefer the look of the music interface to Pioneer's stock one.

Perhaps the best excuse to use CarPlay over a standard setup is the fact that it integrates with other audio content so seamlessly.

Example: I tune to the SiriusXM station I want in the SiriusXM app on the Pioneer head unit.

Then I switch to CarPlay and can view maps for navigating. When it's time to tell me to make a turn, the SiriusXM audio mutes so I can hear the instructions.

If I get a call or text message while listening to SiriusXM (or Pandora or HD Radio, etc.), it will alert me. If I want to instruct Siri to do something, my SiriusXM station goes silent while I talk to her. When we're done, the audio returns.

That integration wasn't possible before. I could never find a way to get audio from both SiriusXM and from my phone's navigation to play through the Pioneer head unit at the same time. If that all makes sense!
