Everything is up to date on a new Macbook Pro bought about 5 months ago from the Apple store. I don't use plug-ins or add ons and run a clutter-free simple system. Web browsing is fine as is Youtube videos, but downloads (under 1G) start off OK and then grind to a halt. I've looked up solutions but only found what seem to be complicated fiddling with the directory manoeuvres that are too risky for my skills.

FileVault is on as is the firewall. No additional virus software on the system.

I previously used a Macbook air, a good few years old with Mountain Lion- same wifi connection and downloads were fine, so it's not the wi-fi.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Many thanks

You might check for RFI or something blocking the Wi-Fi antenna. I noticed my USB 3 hubs put out plenty of RFI and can befuddle nearby wireless devices.
