Viewing folders in Mail App Problems

I am round a friends, and she cannot locate any folders in Mail app, sent , trash, outbox are not listed, i have tried the obvious, it must be something really simple....please advise!

Sorry it's not a very quick response but I was tucked up in bed. 😱

Anyway, these folders grey out if Mail loses an internet connection but they should still be able to be viewed easily. What does she mean but not view them? Does she get a warning? Are the MBOX files still in her Mail folder (under her username/Library/Mail/Something that looks like her email address)?

What does restarting do (the app or Mac)? How about repairing permissions?
