My first Mac arriving shortly. Even if I use the Photos app I will want to keep the photos also in my own albums on the iMac.

1. Can I use Apple TV to get the photos to the TV from the iMac and have a good viewing experience?

2. The iMac will be one floor below the TV. Can I waken up the iMac from the Apple TV, and send it to sleep again?

You will gather that my ignorance here runs pretty deep. All advice gratefully received.

Yup, under iTunes "file" menu you'll see "home sharing"....then pick the folder to share photos. You'll then have to configure the Apple TV's home sharing settings.

I believe you can choose to wake it up under energy settings. I would test the speeds of your Apple TV on the 2nd floor. Mine was always pretty good wirelessly but it wasn't far from my router. If it's not too difficult, you could consider running cable (Ethernet) to it.

many thanks to trs0722.

Any further insights into the likely quality of the viewing experience would be gratefully received.
