I would like to do see a double blind study of 50 people or so.

They all get shown a video on the X in HDR and non-HDR. My hypothesis: they wouldn’t notice a thing.

Edit: This feels unnecessarily negative. I can't wait for my X (when I get it) and I will be happy for HDR as it could only be better. I think I didn't originally convey that I am genuinely curious how many people will notice a difference. But, I should've included that I am excited for it personally. :)

To be honest with you. I’m curious as to if people can tell this and whether it makes it desirable to the user and was actually thinking of doing exactly this tomorrow whilst I watched the Vimeo in the article. My plan is to get iPhone X, iPhone 7, iPhone 6S maybe a 6? and probably a Samsung, play this video simultaneously on all devices and ask people individually which screen they prefer the image on. I’ve got about 100 people at my agency so I’ll see what I can do.

For me, I need to know this, to truly make a case for whether it should or should not be part of my design considerations.

I’ll let you know how it goes.

Ugh. Truth. Unnecessary. Thanks for being kind about it.

No worries. I get punchy at times too.

When you do get your X, try watching an iTunes HDR movie on it. I recommend The Martian. I was pretty stunned. Though I admit not having the patience to figure out how to test it in HDR vs non-HDR (I don't still have my 7 Plus). But the color and contrast sure seems improved. It's impressive.

To be honest, I'm sorta hoping they keep it low. To me it keeps Vimeo from becoming just a video dump where people simply upload stuff "just because". That's what youtube is for imo. Vimeo is community supported instead of ad supported. If you're going to use the service often, you should support it. Just my opinion of course.

Perhaps they could lower the prices a bit or something. It’s like IMDB - it just feels like such a rip.

Reminds me of the difference between 1080P and 4K televisions. Some people will tell you the differences are striking, while many will say they don't really see much difference at all.

Actually HDR is the MOST noticeable thing. More so than 4k. On anything 50” and smaller 4k at a typical seated distance, doesn’t really “wow.” However everyone I’ve shown back to back HDR has instantly noticed a difference; for TV and gaming. I’d take 1080p HDR over 4k non HDR if that was ever a limitation. Lucky for us it’s not. We can have both!

Yeah I'm not seeing any HDR badges anywhere... safari or the vimeo app on my X. Is this supposed to be enabled in a future update? Or has it not rolled out to all users yet or something?

Great move by them. I just downloaded Vimeo on iPhone X. But I can't seem to find any videos with the HDR badge. Even the one MR article gave as an example doesn't have the HDR badge.

Anyone know where to look for to see HDR videos? I'd love to do a comparison of the same video with HDR on and off.

I posted a comment on Vimeo’s site with the press release and they replied. I asked about the HDR tags and being unable to view content in full screen dispite their App Store description saying it was possible. Their response was as follows.

Hi Glenn! Sorry about that, we jumped the gun on announcing edge-to-edge playback with the iPhone X in the release notes. We're working on that ability, as well as HDR badges, for a future update.
I very much appreciated the reply. In the short time I’ve had the X, I’ve grown to really dislike apps that play video but do not expand to full screen. Guess you could say I’ve embraced the notch.

It's 7 dollars a month/anually. Vimeo is a more professional site that caters to professionals. Professionals invest in themselves. $84 a year isn't a huge investment. Maybe I'm missing your intent here. If Vimeo lowered their pricing, how would that help you?

I looked yesterday and it said $15/month - where’s the $7 thing?

Vimeo updated their app today, but I still don’t see any HDR badges on my iPhone X. Does anyone know if this issue has been resolved?

Kind of a jerk move to tease us in the release notes, then make us wait a week (and counting) for the update that actually supports what was described in the notes... I think Apple needs to start cracking down on devs for not having accurate release notes, or for not describing what was changed at all. It's deceptive and really lowers the quality of the entire platform IMO. I know most people don't read release notes, but I sure do, every time XD
