A video that has gone viral which claims to reveal a glitch allowing anyone to unlock a passcode-protected iPhone has been exposed as false.

The YouTube clip, called "iPhone Unlock Without Passcode Glitch", depicts a user gaining access to a Touch ID-equipped device by first asking Siri what time it is.

When the spoken request brings up the time, the user taps on the clock face to reveal the World Clock screen and then selects the Timer icon at the bottom of the screen. He subsequently taps on the 'When Time Ends' option and presses the section that says 'Buy More Tones'.

Upon doing so, the Apple Store opens and the user presses the home button, which unlocks the phone without the user having typed in the passcode.

The video has been viewed over 420,000 times, with some iPhone owners thanking the video's creator for discovering the issue. However, repeated attempts by MacRumors have demonstrated that the method depicted does not allow "anyone" to access a passcode-protected iPhone.

Savvy users will have noted that the method only works because the user activates Siri by pressing the home button with a finger that has clearly already been registered with the Touch ID feature's fingerprint scanner. The same process undertaken using a fingerprint that isn't registered on your iPhone makes subsequent taps to "Buy More Tones" fail to open the iTunes Store.

So if you see anyone sharing the video, you can do them a favor by explaining that the video is misleading, and their phone's data remains safe and secure.

It's not a glitch. The Touch ID recognizes the finger when u turn on Siri.. Try it with someone else.. Or another finger.. Won't happen..

This is hilarious. Did 4chan start this?

If the phone is locked, you cannot buy more tones for alarm.

If the phone is locked, you cannot "Share" the text to send a message or add a contact.

Anyone with an iPhone can test this. Please, don't bother the FBI with these fake videos.

I wonder how many federal agents have wasted their time trying this and other purported methods to get around the passcode?

Haha, my work collegue was trying to show this to me by breaking into my iPhone, he failed to do it on my iPhone6 but it did work on his own 6s. So the reason I couldnt 'break' into my own iPhone was because I was instincively avoiding touching the fingerprint sensor. because of course that would let me in!

Apple has to make a change to Siri.

Siri has to say "here's the time that you requested...and in case you didn't notice, you just unlocked your phone, Bozo."

Why not just use voice recognition to put this to rest.. "Hey Siri, what time is it?" then try to share the text as a msg or buy more tones (there's been multiple instances of this) and you'll notice it doesn't work.

Don't rely on a friend's report. Try it yourself. You will not be able to "unlock" a phone if your finger is not registered.

I think this misperception exists because the finger recognition has gotten so fast that people don't even realize it's happening.

This is expected behavior. Put a registered finger on the TouchID sensor and it unlocks the phone.

The people I've pointed this out to get so pissy when I inform them they shared something fake lol

It is also wrong to say a hoax since it works..... and with default settings (since i haven't messed wiith them...)

He must be very good at it since i tried it myself without him......
I reset my settings to default and couldn't unlock my phone using a non-registered finger and this method. Maybe I'm doing something wrong. In any case, I'll go back to my old settings and not worry about this. :)

you should ask these people to "sell" the solution: I'm sure Mr. Active Cyber-Pathogen would shell out a lot of money for a tip like this.

The "trick" doesn't work because it doesn't have touch ID to secretly unlock the phone.
Sure, but there's still no security issue as you are unlocking the phone with a registered finger. Basically what you are saying there's less room for someone to be confused by something that they did, but not that there's any actual security issue or anything like that being involved there.
