If I took a screen-shot of someone's picture of an image which contains Mary/Jesus/Elvis/Obama/etc, which was on Ebay, could I then post that screen shot as a picture and put that on Ebay as well? We could re-vitalize the economy...

You should check out the Vatican's annual budget. John Paul II was tired of people thinking the Vatican was rich, so he made it public. Sure, they have all those priceless works of art and such, but last year they ran a deficit. And can you imagine the outrage if they decided to sell some of their treasures?
Well, they don't exactly go out of their way to publish their P&L Statement, do they? And while they may say they "ran a deficit", they don't say what their cash flow is, nor the actual worth of their real estate holdings around the world.
Nor do any churches, really. It's not just a catholic thing, at all.

Actually yes, they did go out of their way to publish it. And by the way, the Vatican does not own every Catholic church around the world. I don't think they own anything outside of Italy, actually. And man, the actually dioceses, those are really in the red. A lot of them have been selling off property just to pay the bills.
True. And the lawsuit-a-thon they've been going through hasn't helped...

The most recent I could find was from 2006. It's not incredibly detailed, but it does provide actual numbers which is quite unique for any sovereign state to do.

Er? Unless I've got my blinders on, all I see is a policy statement. I don't see numeric amounts, even referentially... Perhaps they moved the link on you?
