Er? Unless I've got my blinders on, all I see is a policy statement. I don't see numeric amounts, even referentially... Perhaps they moved the link on you?

It has some actual numbers beyond a policy statement, but what I meant by the link is that it's a statement released by the Vatican that accompanied the release of their financial statement. I had limited luck finding an actual statement online, including searching the Vatican's site, but the site was so poorly designed I couldn't find anything. I guess priests aren't that good with web development...

Here's another article about the financial statement they released for 2004.

Another article about the financial statement. You'd think these things would actually be put online...

Well, that's what I was talking about initially... and I really didn't intend this to become a Catholic-specific topic, either. It's an ecumenical problem. It seems that no church wants to say, "hey, we have a bazillion in the bank", or "we own 10,000 acres in Florida" and so on.

I realize they don't have to... but perhaps they should.

Yeah, I think they should, too. A lot of churches and Catholic dioceses are far too secretive about their holdings. I don't think they really have anything to gain by it, either, especially the Catholic diocese that aren't doing so well. I think in those cases the bishops just sort have the old-school mindset of privilege and secrecy just for the sake of saving some sort of face. A lot of the time it backfires, though.
