Virtual Memory Size is Massive?

Just opened up my activity monitor today to see that my VM size is at 127GB... is this in anyway normal? Considering finder tells me I only have 103GB left on the hard drive I find this hard to believe.

I have done some google searches and such, but nothing seems to really explain it. Or at least not well enough in layman's terms.
