Is it necessary? I'm new to mac and I have owned my MBP for over a month now and I want to protect it as much as I can. What are the absolute best programs out there that I should install on my mac for protection if necessary?

Thanks!

You shouldn't need anything, but if you feel safer with software, check out something by Norton.
