This is similar to what they have in Japan only it is integrated into some of their phones.
They also largely skipped the credit card era so they're not really in the same situation as the US. Suica and Passmo are nice but they're not as widely accepted as a generic credit or debit card is here in the states. I suppose that's why Japanese consumers still carry huge wads of 円. Try ferrying a massive amount of cash here in the states and you might get a lot more attention than you would in Japan. Especially since many US stores won't accept anything larger than a $20 for small purchases, which makes carrying cash all the more annoying here.

My Visa and my Amex card both have this built into them.
Why would I buy a case with this crap in it when I can simply wave my wallet in front of the reader?

9 times out of 10 I don't even have to take my wallet out of my pocket.
The readers are low enough for me to simply bump the reader with my back pocket.

Wasted tech in my opinion.

Sounds good on paper but I have yet to find a place where 'payWave' actually works. Usually the employee states the system seldom recognizes the card and they have to run it conventionally. So, if you leave your card at home and trust this thing, you-are-screwed!

So do I need a different CASE for each CARD? "oh wait I'd like to use my Amex let me switch cases..." (yes I understand this is being developed by Visa at the momment).

Until this is #1 built into the phone, #2 works with multiple cards, #3 protected by a pin at least and preferably biometrics, it's just lame tech that will never go anywhere.

Once it does that I'll consider risking the rare situation when my battery might be dead... May e the terminals could/should have a power plug just in case...

I think the 5th gen iPhone will have this built-in.

I'm sure, but what I want is a ring or a watch for payments. I don't want to have to pull out my iphone everytime I want to buy something either. That's the next step.

Funny!

I really find these attempts funny making the iPhone "omnipotent" device!

Tomorrow, someone will release a case that will have in built-in storage for your...

1. House/Car keys and an app on iphone - You can track what time you locked unlocked your home, car etc.
2. Swiss Army Knife and an app on iphone that will tell what too you used and when.

and so on...

Anybody remember those keychain credit cards that you hold up to a machine reader instead of just swiping a normal credit card? Yeah, me neither. (-Edit- The payWave system they mention in the article.)

I use the one in my amex card every day. Especially at cvs, their card readers require you to slide the actual card in and out, but aims it towards the floor, at an angle thats annoying to actually get the card in, so its easier for me to just tap the card than to fight with it.

My idea would be to just stamp or tattoo everybody with a barcode or similar code and just use that for everything, payment, ID, passport, everything. Wouldn't that be incredibly convenient? You wouldn't have to cay around anything. Yeah, I know you'd have to figure out how to make it unique and unalterable, we'd figure out a way.

Haha, like in Minority Report?

Easy to do for free....

Citibank and many other card issuers offer a free RFID PayPass. If you open the PayPass correctly, you can slide the RFID chip/antenna array out for installation into many other devices.

This assembly can be taped to a drivers license/credit card, placed in a wallet, or taped to the inside of almost any iphone/ipad case. A simple removal of a minimal amount of material from inside the case allows the assembly to lay almost flat. There is no need to trim for the antenna, as it is almost paper thin.

Thats sooooo effing stupid! They already build that shyte into creditcards and I have to call them up to have them send me new cards without that crap. I don't like it, its not secure. Also, I don't know one person who uses it. Cash is always the best way!

I agree! I hate those commercials where there's a line of people all paying by credit card, then one comes along with cash or check and the line comes to a halt and everyone gets pissed. It's so untrue. When I'm in line paying for something, it's always the ones with credit/debit cards that cause the hold up. Cash never fails to be the quickest.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16)

Yeah. Meh

Bigger case. I still carry my credit cards anyway. This is lame. It would be huge of this was built into the phone itself though.

Man you guys are lame. I sport teh Paywave or whatever it's called all the time at mcdonalds and the drug store. Its great just from an ease of use standpoint.

But this case is the fug. Sorry but no thanks. I'll jerry rig my own solution

So you just rub your ass on the machine and away you go? ROFL :D

i dont get why so many of done like this tech? i wouldnt think a big credit card company would release a tech that is prone to identity theft and what not. Personally for me, the case doesnt really matter and having it as a payment device is really nice cuz i usually have it out all the time for texting.

Eh... Mark of the Beast much? NOOOOO Thank you.

Nothing new there, they have been using RFID technology like this for years in China/Japan/Korea. Here you can also have the chip in a watch, a keychain, or as a normal card that gets charged when your wallet is close enough to the sensor (no need to take out the card). Korea and Japan included the technology in their cellphones for years and Hong Kong soon will. I really don't see the point of going through all that trouble to put the card in an iPhone case.

I fail to see this having any traction in the US. I mean come on, we still have buses that require exact change, while public buses in some countries like Singapore have been using somekind of card/electronic payment system for more than a decade.

Why this will go nowhere:
1. It relies on additional accessories. Unless it's a built-in RFID/smart chip on the Visa card itself that people automatically get, nobody would bother.
2. Merchant support. Unless every merchant that accept Visa support this, I still have to carry my card. If I still have to carry my card, then why should I bother with additional accessories? I can just use my card that is with me all the time anyway.

I rather see a progress towards online billing. I mean I can order a burito from my iPhone, pay for it online, and just go to a Chipotle store to get it. I don't even need a Visa card. That's the future.
