Two possibilities :

“With modern LASIK, the enhancement rate is 1-2 percent in the first 12 monthsand then about 1 percent a year after that as patients' eyes can change with time. So, for example, 10 years after LASIK, approximately 10 percent of patients may require an enhancement procedure to maintain their excellent vision.”

Or

OLED doesn’t agree with your eyes. So the question remains does it contribute to the degradation? That would be hard to factor.

What about all the androids with WQHD resolution? Are they complaining regarding eye sight degradation? I’m just putting the question out there since this is my first OLED.

I’ve had no issues with eye strain and never contemplating go back to LCD.

I’m 42. My left eye started twitching the same weekend I got the iPhone XS. On a recent trip worsened with increased phone use. Both facts strongly point to the iPhone being the cause, and not some coincidental natural deterioration of my eyesight. Also, worth noting Apple is abandoning their OLED displays for micro LED.

Go and get your eyes tested. You’re of the age when https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Presbyopia sets in (as usefully pointed out earlier in the thread by @saltd ). My eye would sometimes twitch, likely due to the strain. I now have reading glasses and things are a lot better.

i noticed my vision has deteriorated since last year

And just what does that mean? Deteriorated in what way?

i'm 41, did the Lasik 11 years ago and it has been great up until recently.

Since you were so non-specific, most here assumed you meant you were having trouble reading, since you seem to think the iPhone X is the cause.

My issue is nearsighted, I have no problem reading.

Doesn't make sense. If you've had Lasik, you are are NO LONGER nearsighted. You WERE nearsighted. Usually, though, the doctor will leave one eye uncorrected, or do less correction in one eye, so that you still have one that is nearsighted, and so you might then have some hope of getting by without reading glasses later.

FWIW, in general, Lasik makes the need for reading glasses at a later point all that much more likely. I've a friend who is a Materials Engineer, so he does a lot of close work. He wishes now he had not have gotten Lasik, because now he has to wear reading glasses. He would rather now just have to wear glasses for distance.

I am nearsighted, and so I've never needed reading glasses.

Lasik corrects your distance vision. As you age, you lose "accomodation", or the ability to focus. You can't work the muscle that does that. You cannot adjust the eye to focus on closer objects. If you have not yet lost this ability - you will.

If you "have no trouble reading" it is only because you've - so far - dodged presbyopia, and are still able to focus your eyes.

There has been some experimental work with surgery I think to shorten the muscle, and also with self-adjusting contacts, lens implants, etc.

Well, I tossed my SIM back in my older 6. Figured if that fixed it then, I don’t need to waste any money at the doctor. It’s been less than 24 hours back on my 6 and I am already experiencing a noticeable decrease in symptoms. I’m going to go all week on the 6 and see if the twitching completely stops. If so, that’s going to solidify the X as the cause.

Eye strain is reversible, deterioration probably not so much.

Just go and get them checked. It’s not a waste of money when it’s your health on the line. And it would be an optometrist, not doctor.

‘People over 35 are at risk for developing presbyopia and all people become affected to some degree.’ (Emphasis mine. From the same Wikipedia page linked earlier).

Yeah but, that would be taking the less objective approach to the situation. The eye doctor would likely give me some very vague possibilities (like your wiki links) and shrug their shoulders at anything to do with the phone or it’s technology. And if it’s the phone causing this, you bet I want to know. Nobody knows my body better than me. The fact this eye twitch started the same exact weekend I got my XS and has persisted ever since is enough to warrant my testing. If using my iPhone 6 cures me then it’s obviously not my eyes coincidentally going bad. It’s the phone. And if I determine it to be the phone THEN, I’ll consider going to the eye doc to better assess the damage.

You must work for Apple? If these phones are causing eye damage for even a small percentage of users, it’s worth finding out & calling out. I’m not the only one suffering after switching to the X so, yeah. I mean I’m an Apple fan boy too.. until someone loses an eye.

If the face id on these phones were causing permanent eye damage since 9/2017, there would be some documented and well known cases, I would think. Similar to the the concerns that cell phones cause brain cancer.

I do not doubt for a second however, that some people are very sensitive to some screens and flicker, and can experience eye strain. I myself have been diagnosed with such a condition that causes flashes of light in my eyes (and my eyes are medically normal). Everybody should use the equipment they feel comfortable with and can tolerate.

Long, hard read, but..Should i say.. finally.. welcome to my world :) have been rumbling about this and similar stuff for at least 10years now.. guess I'm not the only one now:) and guess what else.. There is nothing wrong with your eyes, there is nothing doctor can do ->they are clueless -> they don't care...Glasses, Filters->there is no glasses that can filter something that have terrible design flaws, that's made with cheap human work, that's made only to make profit to blink and shine like candy, to be wanted... Today mobile phones, monitors, displays are nowhere near quality of the ones when first lcd came out (back then health was something that was taken in consideration while designing something for humans).. Today they sell displays which are nothin more than "neon advertising signs", glowing surface with black dots on it. Higher contrast-stronger "back" light.. Watch light bulb, focus on it, watch cfl, led for some time i bet you all will suffer from same symptoms described here, sooner or later.. Our mobile phones, monitors, displays, tv's became nothing more then glowing bright light bulb.. Contrast of 5.000.000 trilions:1, how can you get that? Watch at sun for some time and put tennis ball with 5000w reflector pointed at it between sun and your eyes, if you don't go blind you will be amazed with contrast you will see, green will maybe turn to black but contrast... Let's take Ipad Pro for example, 120Hz for fancy animations but 30Hz or less for reading, static images... led backlight which can't glove for long without incorporating fast on/off at some frequency (they say human eye can't see that, i bet they are lying, remember cigarette factory's when they invented cigarettes, cigarettes are good...) They say you can see text while scrolling, haha, with all that blurring, refocusing, subtraction of pixels, display ghosting, haha .. In today "led" world, can you focus on one pixel, no matter how small it is, i bet you could see it if you train your eye well, ofc if that pixel you are trying to see it's there for real, but it's not. it's imaginary, human knowledge incorporated in its worst form.. Good luck to you all in future years while displays will get cheaper, more unhealthier, brighter.. Can't wait for night shift v3.0, I bet it will be super healthy, haha :).. Today display tech needs to be reinvented, this staring in glowing light bulb is so wrong... If not, Can i recommend backlight for next gen, 400W hps bulb, 56000lumens so we could go for 500.000.000.000:1 contrast.... p.s. it may burn your eyes but it would be awesome to see that contrast, at least for a second...

My eyes used to work great by themselves, but after 52 years of use, they need some assistance now. Books that used to be easy to read require extra help these days (and I don’t mean the digital, but analog books).
