If you bought a genuine unlocked iPhone in Italy then experienced problems so went to a UK Apple Store, will they service it for you. I would assume you would need AppleCare to provide global support?

yes my dad's 3G was from italy.

apple only service iPhones in the country they were purchased.

but with apple care, its global service.

but please be careful, my dad almost got short changed. They gave him a locked o2 for his unlocked 3G. but as soon as he realized and contacted them, they posted a new one 2 weeks later. they dont stock unlocked ones in Apple stores.

You should be protected under EU law for goods and services bought in another member state and Apple should provide service for the first 12 months. However, this is limited to your statutory rights which may be less than the service cover you get from Apple otherwise.

I've just had another look and you only save £50 getting it from Italy, I know its unlocked but I dont travel so I'm not that bothered. Just trying to get it at the cheapest cost to me.
