Visiting NYC

My wife and a couple of her friends went to NYC earlier this year and said they had a lot of fun. I haven't been there since I was a kid (25+ years ago) so I've been getting the itch to go.

Basically, I want to take a lot of pictures of the city/skyline, etc, so where's the best place to stay that won't cost a fortune? What's the best means to get there? I'm in Virginia. My wife and her friends took a Greyhound but I'm curious if a train would be better. I think flying is out as is driving. It's not the drive, it's what to do with the car once you're there.

Just looking for some tips since I'll be a complete noob.
