I love VH. I use it mainly for re-encoding x264 episodes of 'House' and 'The Office' to watch on my 360. It's easy to use, very fast, and money well spent.
I've got VH but I've got some problems...
I would love to know if somebody could help me with my VH. If possible to respond to me by e-mail because since I have a low connection, using all these forums takes plenty of time.

blackbones, i tried it with 1 pass enconding. it worked fine. although definitly not as nice as 2 pass. do you have any experiance with 2 apss encoding.

I've been using visualhub for a while now and apart from my HD movie files I have converted all my TV shows and Movies, about 1TB in total.
I use iTunes tab > Apple TV ? H.264 > Go Nuts
problem is my 350mb episodes ended up at aroubnd 600mb and my 1.07GB 720p eps ended up over 4 gig in size!
so all I do is hid the advanced tab and "Limit video size to" and set the size to my original file size.
means I get Apple TV compatible video, in full quality, in the same file sizes as i'm used to and happy with.
I've also been using Xgrid (Mac Pro and Macbook pro) this is converting them SO much faster, I can convert a 350mb TV episode in less than 4 minutes.

Xgrid is a way of using more than one proccessor to convert files.
it's manily for use on a network with more than one computer, but it can be used on a single machine with more than one core...e.g.
I have a 2.6Ghz Quad Mac Pro and a 2Ghz CD Macbook pro..a total of 6 processors, 2x2Ghz and 4x2.66Ghz
Xgrid will make use off all these processors by giving each on a seperate file.
this is not of much use if you're only converting one file, but if you have say...a season of a tV show...or a list of music videos it can really help.
check out VisualHubs manual (over at techspansion) on setting it up, it takes about 10mins and can speed up converting times by a lot, dependant on your machine/machines
technically you can also use it to use multiple processors to do one or more jobs together...anyone with a Core Duo, Core 2 Duo or Xeon can use Xgrid..no matter how many machines they have

Hey there arcsbite, do you use 2 pass encoding? i after many many tries, have come to the conclucion that 2 pass does not work when convertins dvds. any experiance?

I've had nothing but trouble with 2pass.
plus, as I mentioned I use xgrid to speed up conversion and it doesn't support 2pass so I don't bother with it, not worth the hassle

well thank god im not going crazy. i couldnt figure out why 2 pass wouldnt work. why not?
anyway. you dont notice a significant differnce with 2 pass? i certainly do using handbrake. I just cannot stand losing sound anymore.

No idea why it doesn't work, to be honest, on my 37" TV I don't notice a difference between 1pass and 2pass so I don't sweat it lol

I agree, which is SUCH a shame, because I really love the program, and want to support a community more than a company. but these audio issues are REALLY bad, and waste a TON of time.

I unfortunately am stuck with some slower processors for encoding my fastest is a PC with an AMD X2 3400, not blazing fast but ok, my others a windows Mobile Laptop with a dothan chip, and a Mac Mini with a PPC 1.42 processor. So H264 can be lengthy, but I use it for Movies with Handbrake on the PC. FOr TV Shows I use straight Mpeg 4, Using either Clonemobile DVD from Slysoft, Nero Recode 2, or on the Mac Handbrake. The image is a tad bit sharper with H264 and the file sizes a bit smaller, but it's not worth the double to triple encoding time to use H264. 2 Pass in Nero with Quicktime compatibility checked makes a real nice looking file that looks and sounds good on the apple TV, and its fast.

I had trouble with that same file. did you figure it out?
yeah. it was the filename. i renamed the folder and the file to something simpler and it worked fine.
I think a lot of you folks would benefit from the AppleTV Fooler applescript, which basically creates a wrapper that allows for files to be added to iTunes library without needing to be converted with VisualHub etc. It's very fast as it's just copying/pasting/flattening/saving the "movie". This applescript has saved me *countless* hours and now all my media content is managed with iTunes very neatly.
The only time I ever convert using VisualHub is for content above 720p (like 1080p BluRay/HDDVD content) that can't play on the aTV anyway. I also use VisualHub for Matroska content, which is the only format/container that AppleTV Fooler barfs on. Sometimes I'll convert 720p using "High" to save some space. I've found that "Go Nuts" is seriously overkill for most stuff. For higher bit rates 2-pass is also overkill, adding a ton of conversion time for not much visual benefit.
Get Apple TV Fooler from the Awkward TV wiki page.. keep in mind there is an issue with the latest Quicktime update so that may effect you also.
