Vivaldi has released version 7.9 of its iOS browser, introducing two-level tab stacks, Safari import tools, and a new Daily Image feature.

Two-level tab stacks is said to be the browser's most-requested iOS feature, having been available on Android since 2021. Tabs are now grouped into stacks displayed in the top row of the Tab Bar, with the tabs inside each stack appearing in a second row below, but only when that stack is active, in order to keep the interface clean.

There are two stacking styles included: Two-Level and Accordion. Users can select their preference in the app via Settings ➝ Tabs ➝ Tab Stacking Style. Creating a stack involves long-pressing the New Tab button and selecting New Tab Stack.

As mentioned, version 7.9 also comes with a new option to import bookmarks, passwords, browsing history, and stored payment information directly from Safari. The feature can be found in Settings ➝ Safari Import, and requires just a single step and confirmation.

Elsewhere, the new Daily Image feature shows a new curated photograph on the Start Page each day. Users can now also optionally sync that image as their iPhone wallpaper, keeping their Start Page and Home screen in step and refreshed automatically every day.

Vivaldi 7.9 is available now for iPhone and iPad via the App Store. [Direct Link]

That's actually something I would really like Safari to have.

Yes, Tab Groups exist, however having them in the sidebar is rather inconvenient, at least for me. Also, Tab Groups are buggy as hell and will frequently either reload, or worse, not load pages when switching to them.

Why don't they just make it sidebar style like Sidebery extension for Firefox?

Infinite nested tabs, and easier to see more at once.

That's why I use the Samsung Browser on my Android devices. I love it. Much easier to switch to different pages

I truly love Vivaldi, but just cannot use it on any device since I value cross device sync, and at least for me, can’t go a day without Vivaldi on iOS without it running noticeably slower than any other browser, mainly because I require Adblock and this is what I’ve found slows it down the most.

why would I want to eat up screen real estate on a small screen to always show my tab groups? i don’t even like showing my tabs on iphone (preferring to access them via the button at the bottom with full previews)

this is definitely not for me. to me clean browsing is focusing on the content of the current tab. but to each his own.

Vivaldi browser is top notch as an browser for the car, for passanger or centre display for Audi etc...But for smartphones, safari and chrome remains the two most used i think
Probably the most used. I much prefer Brave and DuckDuckGo browsers on iOS and Android.

The Adblock implementation for Vivaldi on iOS devices is probably one of the worst. There was a bug (idk if there still is.) where updating the Adblock filter lists would heat up your phone something awful, only for the filter lists to not get updated. Also, the adblocking isn’t very robust, ads would still slip though.

The only other browser for iOS that has much better adblocking for cross platform syncing is probably Brave, since they have their own solution built-in and is way more robust than Vivaldi.

Yeah, Vivaldi on iOS is truly diabolical. It’s always like noticeably slower than anything I use directly comparing it. Orion seems to work fine for me, but I was really interested in the desktop version of Vivaldi, so it’s disappointing seeing it works so poorly on iPhone. I think my phone was heating up while using it, but to be fair, my battery is shot so it heats up a lot now XD

Niche power user feature.

Honestly, I think that browser UX is pretty much 'done' now and browser makers are just fiddling around with new UX features that simply won't go mainstream.

But great for those that appreciate them.
