I use a lot of tabs in multiple windows (I know, bad habit) in Safari and Firefox and get frustrated finding and returning to a particular website after browsing for a while. So, I wondered if any browsers support "live tab thumbnails", and ChatGPT tells me that Vivaldi is the best for that.

Any comments on Vivaldi, experiences good or bad? Security and privacy?

I tried Vivaldi and it’s okay but not great. On my M2 Air it feels a little sluggish compared to Safari. I suspect that that’s because it’s Chromium based. The upside is since everyone uses Google Chrome it may be the better choice for compatibility.

My current favorite is Orion browser. It’s my current Firefox replacement and it’s built on the WebKit engine like Safari. It feels faster than Safari to me. For what I do like hosting on MacRumors and watching YouTube videos it’s working great.

I use Safari for anything that requires security such as logging onto the bank account, etc., and Orion for the rest of my web browsing.

Vivaldi works for me. I've been using it for the last few years. However, I do use extensions. And one of those is uMatrix which is an ad and third party website blocker. So, I've never experienced any sluggishness.

The great thing about Vivaldi is that you can use Chrome extensions.

As to live tab previews…bottom left corner.

Could you elaborate a bit more what you mean by that? Because as far as I can see, pretty much every modern browser supports tab thumbnails including Firefox, Opera, Chrome, or Edge.

If I have a browser window with, say 6 tabs in a bar (ala Safari or Firefox), I would like to be able to view 6 live thumbnails of all those tabs in one window to select the one I want. When I select the one I want, the window could revert to tabs in a bar, or stay in thumbnail view. Ideally, maybe an easy way to switch back and forth between "window view with tab bar" and "thumbnail view".

I've looked for this capability in only Safari and Firefox and not found it, but...

Ah, so you want an overview of all opened tabs with thumbnails in contrast to the thumbnail previews you get when hovering over the tab titles. Got it.

You got it. Don't know if it's possible within the MacOS window design guidelines, but it would be an improvement IMO.

Is Orion browser compatible with MacOS Sequoia?

Yes, that’s what I have on my MacBook Air. I’m not saying it’s necessarily better than Safari, but it’s a good alternative. I like to keep my browsing with paying bills and financial stuff sandboxed from YouTube, posting on here and stuff like that. Google already does enough tracking so I don’t want them tracking me financially too much.

I tried out Vivaldi under macOS Monterey on my M1 Max Mac Studio. It is very nice. Minimalistic clean user interface, subjectively faster than many browsers... worth more time and investigation.
