so... i'm still on mojave. for a variety of reasons.

but it looks like i'm going to have to update my machines to big sur (not monterey), again for a variety of reasons.

one reason however is that i still have quite a few family videos in 32bit .avi and .wmv formats.

i KNOW catalina and beyond will no longer play these videos but can VLC play them without support form the OS?

Yes. I am on Monterey and just downloaded a sample WMV file and opened it in VLC and it played back.
I did the same with an AVI file.
 
Why don't you try and convert them to a more modern format before updating? You will make them more compatible with more and newer devices and you will likely reduce their size, taking less space overall.
