Is there any way via plugins that this can end with me having Popcorn Time on Apple TV without Jailbreaking? That would be really cool.

Me too. Plex was the only reason I was going to hang onto my Rokus.

Same...until this football season when Direct TV started offering Sunday Ticket for Roku. :D

I guess my question is, do the old ATVs not have access to the app store? Are they just not going to update the OS on the older versions?

I had actually been hoping Apple would make a portable version of ATV. I take that chrome cast with me but it is a PITA most of the time.

OH HELL YES

Seriously, I am really REALLY impressed by what I've seen on the new Apple TV. as A Roku user, its a much MUCH nicer device. the MLB and especially NHL app really tickled my fancy.

but, I'm fist deep in the Plex ecosystem and that was a huge deal for me. If they've managed to integrate Plex with the Siri Voice search as well.

well I'll be. I'll be purchasing one of these on launch. MLB, NHL, Plex, Netflix are the 4 things that MUST be usable for me.

I hope they'll have a Stream from Chrome app, I love being able to just stream whatever I'm looking at on Chrome to my Chromecast. If Apple TV had this then I might look into buying one...

I will gladly start eating crow now. I admit I would not have imagined Apple letting PLEX let alone VLC onto their ATV.

Sometimes, its nice to be wrong and this is one time I am glad I was wrong.

YES! That seals the deal for me.
man the only reason i went with roku over appletv was to use plex, i'm getting this new appletv on launch date now! i just use the roku for the like room or something, **** i might just get two appletvs

I checked yesterday, Plex still doesn't support iTunes movies and TV shows properly.
Too bad, I actually like Plex, but it's of no use to me due to that.

Do you mean that Plex can't play things purchased from iTunes? That's DRM restrictions from iTunes/Apple, not Plex. Plex can play many more media types than iTunes/ATV.

But if you are locked into iTunes purchases, then you are definitely much better off staying there. Though, Plex is far far superior at handing meta data in general for movies & TV shows than iTunes is.

XBMC would be the killer app!
FYI, XBMC is now dead, current builds are called "Kodi". Same thing, new name.

I don't see Kodi happening anytime soon though. While Plex has become more "officially" embedded on devices, due to its many uses, XBMC/Kodi is still looked on in the industry as a "pirate's" app. We all know Plex is used the same way, it's just that they have paid to get official licensing and offer "legit" services with their paid plan. Kodi.... not so much. The fact that Plex will be there is a big leap of faith for Apple, because it means they are finally shedding their obsession with exclusivity and dependance on iTunes sourced media. Besides, they know that none of this will matter once we all subscribe to the "all you can eat" video service they will soon announce. Just like Music... does anyone really pirate mp3's anymore? Soon we will have "Apple Media" or some all-encompassing entertainment service to stream your music, movies, Tv shows, and books anywhere and everywhere, thus killing pirating. All in all, this is certainly a big step for Apple, and really, one that they needed to make to keep pace. This Apple TV is also the most I recall them advertising the platform. Ask around, right? When you tell your friends and co-workers about the "apple tv"... don't they just stare at you clueless? Most people I tell actually think it is a TV. Apple always called this a "hobby" but with the proper marketing (easy for Apple), this will be THE device to have in the living room. As a ATV user since ATV1, I'm really looking forward to it.

Apple still has to approve both apps. I'm sure they're coming in some form. I think that was a given. But will they have all the desktop features or will there be some crippling required for iOS?

VLC! Awesome.

I don't want to poop on anyones party but it says they are developing the apps, but will Apple allow them on the App Store?!

I can't see why not. They allow the Plex App on the iOS app stores. Unless Apple puts in place some additional restrictions on TvOS for some reason

I am so desperately hoping that at least one of these will play DVD .iso images off the network.

Thing is, I have a collection of hundreds of DVDs ripped to a network volume as ISOs (so I can get at menus and extra features for the full effect), but I haven't yet come up with a solution other than a full computer that will actually play them smoothly on a TV.
I just gave up on this setup last week, and let my Mac Pro crunch every DVD down to a H.264 file. Though I had each DVD broken out of the .iso as well, with just the raw files right on disk separated into folders per disc.

The ideal setup was still Front Row on the PPC Mac Mini I had. To get it to work, all you had to do was create a link in the ~/Movies folder to the network share with the DVD folders. Front Row would show every folder, and kick into DVD playback mode when one was picked.

It's unfortunate the same transition for CDs to digital didn't also happen in movies. That stage of legal transcoding was so nice to enable a company such as Apple to invest in real efforts like iTunes and farther down the road, iTunes Match. If I open iTunes now, all my music dating from my first CD to my most recent AAC purchase is in one place. Movies? Not so much.

If VLC works on Apple TV the way it does on Windows/Mac, then I'll have no problem buying this. FINALLY, some options on an Apple device.

The report is wrong in the fact you don't need a jail broken Apple TV to use Plex currently. PlexConnect is a lil bit of a pain to get installed and running, but once it is you just add a profile to your ATV and repoint the DNS and you have full access to your library. Works pretty well and has been my bedroom install on my Apple TV 3 for about 18 months.

I might be splitting hairs, but you don't need to jailbreak your Apple TV to get Plex to work. You do have to install a certificate and point your DNS at he machine running your Plex Connect Server and Plex Server to hijack the Trailers app, but you don't have to jailbreak the ATV.

Now if only Air Video gets an app, I'm on board...

Are these apps only going to be available on the new Apple TV? haven't watched the whole presentation.
