I'm running Sonoma on my 21.5 desktop Mac and I want to make VLC the default player. Received wisdom is to do this via the Get Info pane on the disk but there is no option to change the default.

DVD player is buried in the Applications folder of Core Services and it occurred to me that I could trash it, but do not have permissions to do so.

Any ideas?

You could try "RCDefaultApp".

It's a preference/settings pane that gives you a wide range of choices as to setting default apps, default actions, etc.

It's free.
Find it here:

Advisory:
It's old and I don't believe it's supported any longer.
But it may still work for you.
EDIT: I wrote this originally on Mojave (2018 Mini). I just tried it on my 2021 MBP 14" (Sonoma), and it still seems to be working!

Worth trying.
If you do try it, could you come back and let us know?
