So close, and yet so far....

Plays the video and displays the channel names for my HD Homerun Prime perfectly. Lack of AC3 makes it a soundless viewing experience.

Give me AC3, and I'll finally have the solution I've been looking for.

what can you do with VLC on TV? i never use it. i use plex for streaming movies since apple tv streaming is a little bit laggy
I would point out the Apple TV streaming isn't laggy for many, myself included, the weakest link is your own end, the internet connection and / or your internal WiFi set up. I used to have some issues despite having 75 Mb/s FiOS but the addition of a second Apple Airport Extreme acting as a slave to the first one cured everything. It seems the WiFi signal from the far end of the house was getting messed up until I added the booster station. I have had zero issues since adding it.

You could read the article you are commenting on. That would be one way to find out.

Pretty much same stuff, but once they add cloud support, that addition should help it stand out. The subtitles.org pull is pretty nice.
No. Many more formats and options for locations of files besides cloud. It's in the article of course...

Many will be very happy at this addition to the app store.

But since this is mac rumours, most will be disgusted and outraged.

Or they will make comments or have questions that are found in the article they are commenting on but obviously haven't read...

I love Air Video HD its my go to video choice. I need to find something that can play my DVD ISO back up files. I had a boxee box but that died. I would love the appletv 4 but not sure if any 3rd parties support ISO files.

I have Plex and Air Video HD. I use Air Video more because it is simpler and I don't like the Plex interface very much. VLC will play more formats than either though.

You're not the only one. iTunes/Home Sharing still offers vastly more stable, polished and reliable experience versus Plex etc. Even for those who torrent stuff - most video can be torrented in H.264/MP4 format these days, so it's iTunes compatible from the get go, without the need to transcode.
There is simply no need to complicate things with Plex and other 3rd-party solutions.

iTunes/Home sharing plays a minimal number of formats.

This used to be the case, but no longer really is. SMB has been optimized a lot in the past few years.
I get wire speed (gigabit) moving files across my network with SMB.

Correcta nd it has been because Apple has improved their SMB sharing. NFS has always been a slow protocol including on servers.

Following a lengthy beta testing period, VideoLAN has announced that its VLC app is now available for the fourth-generation Apple TV on the tvOS App Store.

The app is a full port of the VLC media player and supports virtually all video formats in line with the VLC for iOS app. There are also many tvOS-specific features.

- Content Discovery: The app automatically discovers video files stored on your local network, using the SMB, UPnP media server, FTP and PLEX protocols. You can browse through videos with the Siri Remote and select content for playback. During playback, subtitles can be added from OpenSubtitles.org.

- Saved Logins: Login credentials can be securely stored on the Apple TV and will be synchronized to and from your iPhone and iPad.

Remote-Playback-VLC-Apple-TV.jpg

- Remote Playback: VLC displays an IP address under the Remote Playback menu on Apple TV. This address can be typed into your computer's web browser, and an interface will pop up allowing you to drag and drop a file to play it on your TV remotely.

You can drag and drop multiple files to queue them. The files will remain available locally on the Apple TV until its internal storage is maxed out. The web interface can be used for remote play, pause and seeking.

- Playback: VLC for the Apple TV supports basic play, pause and seek controls. You can navigate the app by chapter and titles or select from multiple audio and subtitles tracks. Other features include custom playback speed and hatchet.is integration for artist imagery and biographies.

VLC is currently beta testing Apple TV support for cloud services Dropbox, OneDrive and Box. The feature will be available in the near future.

Really? I was going to try this but if it has stupid issues like this I'm going to stick with Plex.

It seems Plex is the only app that's gotten "playing arbritrary stuff from your server on the Apple TV" right so far.

I keep getting an empty folder. I have SMB and file sharing turned on with files in my shared folder. Anyone know how to get it to find files in the Local Network?

Well, it started to work for some reason, maybe just needed to reset. Not a great UI, doesn't even seem to be alphabetizing the titles, won't open folders, definitely not playing audio on MKV, needs some work

Torrented files/movies/TV shows right? I mean that's why people want Plex and this right? Can I just go ahead and say it?
Not necessarily torrented videos. A lot of us have “digitized” our DVD collections, which is perfectly legal as long as we don’t distribute it.

No answered my questions!

If i have clips on the VLC app on my iPhone, what's the easiest way to play them on VLC app on Apple TV?

VLC is been my favorite media player till date but I haven't used it in my Apple TV yet. Let me give a try!
