Looks pretty cool, but AirVideo already lets me play all my random video formats on my iPad without even having to worry about transferring them to the iPad.

Exactly. I'd use VLC over any other video program any day.

AirVideo lets you stream any video from your desktop to your iPad, unless I'm missing something it looks like VLC will be implemented as a player for other formats that will be loaded onto your iPad. Very different.

I use VLC all the time. Superior video player to Quicktime and any other video player.

Is this app going to be ported for the iPhone/iTouch eventually? I've seen a lot of apps that claim to play avi, but it seems that it only merely streams them from your computer rather than actually plays it off the device.

i'll definitely try it. It's worked very well for me on my desktop and of course, being FREE is a big plus.

If it'll stream over wifi from a network drive, it wins.

If you'll be able to store movies locally on the iPad - especially if you'll be able to 'open with' from, say, Goodreader, it also wins.

If it'll handle the range of formats it does on the desktop, it wins.

    I like VLC. :)

    Vlc

How do you remove a movie from VLC. I tried a movie and it said the Ipad was too slow to play it. So I tried to remove it but I cannot figure out how. I followed the directions to ADD it to VLC but there is no choice to delete or remove. Tried dragging it to the trash but n luck. It's not in Itunes except for the file transfer place.

Select movie in file transfer, hit delete on keyboard.

For testing I've been loading it up with several movie format types.

DIVX encoded AVI file....works fine, video + sound
XVID encoded AVI file....works fine, video + sound
MKV encoded file...tried several, none seem to be working, get an error that the iPad isn't fast enough to play it.
WMV encoded file.....I have transferred several over to the iPad via VLC in the app folder....NONE appear to be transferring over to the device. When I launch VLC, my files aren't there. Weirdness.

That's too bad about MKV files. I hope support for DiVX and Xvid is better than Cinexplayer. I had difficulty with about half my files. I'm not enough of an expert to know which additional codecs were causing issues that might be addressed by VLC. I will be giving it a try tonight though.

not at home to try this, but it seems that they never fully tested the app and making us as beta tester :D it's a good app nonetheless
