I'm experiencing a little annoying problem when playing 720p and 1080p content on my MBP using VLC 0.8.6.i. It's otherwise just fine, but every now and then the video abruptly stops for a split second. Not long, just enough to notice a little hop on the audio and video.

I'm pretty certain this isn't due to lack of any kind of power on a new MBP even though I'm running usually Terminal and iTunes, maybe even Safari on the background. However, I am accessing the file from an external drive through FW800. Could that be an issue? I mean if it reads a bit of the file to a buffer of some kind and then fails to get the next piece early enough or something?

Help appreciated!

The issue is VLC. You need to install Plex if you want an excellent HD audio and video experience on your Mac.
