I'm not a fan of VLC's UI...
Im hoping iina gets M1 support soon.

Me neither but there has been nothing on GitHub regarding M1 beyond an open issue (#3218) since November - no activity, milestone or anything. Looks like IINA may be on its way out.

Why is it that after 20 years, VLC still stutters, can't deal with MKVs properly, and is basically useless for animu?

I love how the icon changes in the dock for the holidays 🎅🏻

It's annoying that there are separate versions for Intel and Apple Silicon CPUs rather than just having a universal build. It makes volume deployment much more complex.

Try playing Tenet 4K Blu-Ray with this new M1 version it’s using 50% CPU on my base MBA. Too bad I haven’t check what the old one used. ☹️

I remember when I checked to see if there was an OSX build of VLC media player before buying a Mac back in PowerPC. It's a big step.

Another vote for IINA. After 2 months, there seems to be movement on the nightly builds, and even a mention of building Sparkle on arm64, so perhaps in a few months IINA will be native too.

No one appreciates VLC enough. Active FOSS development on all platforms. Reliable, solid, easy, polished. Unlike many FOSS projects that are half made and you have to RTF to make it work.

Standalone video players seem dying in popularity, everything is an app and in browser now. Also, MacOS still ships with QT so I don't get why people opt for VLC/IINA.

Really a fan of https://iina.io
it's really lightweight and feels a lot less sluggish than VLC. Maybe because it's new code written in Swift.

I don't trust IINA so much because it seems like a side project, you can use it of course I am just saying. I wish someone creates a fork of VLC like IINA for MPV, as in create a "MacOS-ish" cover for VLC.

Honestly, funtionality wise, I don't know if there is a difference but I rather support VLC project to keep it going. VLC is available on all platforms.

Wonder how many apps were optimized for M1 til now? Any lists made in the MRforum?

I have never seen a new OS/CPU being supported so fast even when the current apps were working just fine in emulation. My only guess is that Apple made a software that has 2 export buttons: 1-Make app for Intel , 2-Make app for M1. Thats all the developer had to press.

You didn't go with at least 512 SSD? Gotta think about future proofing your purchases.
Future proofing is a myth, peddled by the ill-informed. Spending Apple-money for Mac mini storage would be bonkers.

Fat binaries, on the other hand, should be considered a transitional phase as the market for apps drifts to Apple Silicon alone.

I used to swear by this app.

Now I just stream everything, so my disc-buying days are over.

Which is good, because I just refuse to re-buy hundreds of films in higher res now that I finally went 4K in my living room.

I just don't need Handbrake or this app, or a real computer for that matter, anymore. The weakest iPad now has enough power to do everything I need or want to with a computer these days.

My, how old I have gotten.

Anyone else seeing how in the System Information app, VLC now shows up as being of kind: 'iOS'? (if you go under 'Software' > 'Applications')

True native apps would be of kind: 'Apple Silicon'. So I'm just curious about how VLC has approached this, and whether iOS makes any difference and it's native as native can be!
