I've got my VLC player, and if they 'bump' of tap my macbook it jerks and stops for about a second or two - is this normal?

Depends on how hard you're bumping it. System has a sudden motion sensor that will protect the heads on the hard drive that isn't hard to trip. VLC is streaming data off the hard drive with very little buffer, if SMS kicks in there will indeed be a noticeable delay.

Literally I simply tapped it :/
