VM Size Huge!

Before upgrading to Leopard, Tiger Activity Monitor would report my VM size at about 10 GBs or so.

I noticed recently that something had happened to about 45 GBs of space on my main HD... lo and behold, when I opened Activity Monitor, the system is using almost 50 GBs for its VM!

Is this normal?
