How about real NAT configuration? It would be nice to be able to easily set up port forwarding for programs and servers that need it. [...]

Hi,
quite some things can be done by editing

/Library/Application\ Support/VMware\ Fusion/vmnet8/nat.conf

(the header of this file reads "Linux NAT configuration file" by the way :rolleyes:)

Bye,
Chris

Will vBox allow me to use the BC partition I have up and running or does it require an entirely new installation? If it uses BC partitions I am all for it.

D

Basically, you cannot. I read somewhere that they had plans to support it at some point, but I don't know if that's true or if they're still working on it. See http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=9223 for a discussion about it and some things you can try.

In any case, regardless of what software you use, I think most people find the experience better with an image file than a genuine HD partition. I suppose the only bad thing is that you lose the ability to natively boot into it if you want that extra ounce of performance compared to running it virtually.

awe only directx9.0c no 10? :( If I can use all of my video cards power this would be freaking awesome about time they did this. I guess three times a charm.

Looks interesting. I normally use BootCamp full time, but if this is good enough, I may switch over.

I usually recommend that if people use virtualization, they should do it from a Boot Camp drive anyway, if possible

It is more stable and robust to have a disk partition, than a disk image file. Also, it is a redundant operating system if the mac OS side goes nuts for some reason, you can still boot windows by itself and use the computer, and vice versa.

Plus, running one OS or the other solely, makes sure you have all of the hardware resources for that OS, not split off for the other. Processor cycles and RAM both get divided to run 2 OSs simultaneously.

But adding VMware or Parallels to the mac side adds convenience to run both simultaneously when you can afford to split the resources.

Version 3.0 does look promising. Will be interesting to play with.

They should offer a $29 upgrade price (for a limited time) to match the Windows 7 and Snow Leopard upgrade prices. (There was a limited time offer for Windows 7 upgrade at $29 on Amazon and a few other places).

Is there a Beta of Fusion 3 available.
Please notify me! I need it!

Yeah, I do have a beta of VMware Fusion 3, but in order to download it you would have to log in with my email address and use the serial they emailed me. :( I was sent an email a little bit ago with a download link and serial. You may be able to find it through google?

Effectively they are: Fusion 2.0 on Amazon is now $40 with a $10 rebate, since it is bought after 10/1 you'd qualify for a free upgrade to 3.0. If you are a Parallels user they "competitive upgrade" to Fusion 2.0 is $30, so you'd get Fusion 3.0 for $10 net.

FWIW yesterday before the announcement it was $27-$10 MIR.

I still can't get Aero in my VM working properly, but the new features are GREAT! :)

I had problems with Aero in the earlier builds, but the current one seems quite happy. Depends on hardware though, and I guess you need something significantly better than the requirements for running Aero natively.

So, to anyone is in the beta, can you tell us what your "Windows Experience Index"is when running a VM compared to running on it's own (under Bootcamp)?

Aero compatibility, to me, would mean they're finally getting graphics processing to the capabilities on par with running the native OS. I'd like to know how close they're getting.

vmware = about a 2 probably
bootcamp = about a 5 depending on the model

does anybody know, if the new version will support wpf (windows presentation foundation) properly? with vmware fusion 2.x i had to switch off 3d graphics acceleration, which was (of course) a performance issue in consequence!

thanks for your answers!

Do you mean Through shared folders?

I have all my VS projects on the Mac drive so Time Machine and Mozy can back them up. VS refused to load the projects from the shared folder, however, this page sorted me out:

Aha! Thanks, I'll check that out. At the time I didn't find any info on this other than it was a "known issue" according to vmware's support site.

Hmm....

Assuming this works out, I'll soon have to decide on upgrading parallels or fusion...

There is no public beta available (it was private testing).

I'm still under the NDA, but I've been testing it extensively, and the speed increase is noticable. I still can't get Aero in my VM working properly, but the new features are GREAT! :)

I got Aero working on my beta of 3.x. Did you reinstall the VMWare Tools from the beta?

Very snappy...

When running a program like VM Fusion do you have to install a antivirus program? I have always wanted to run Windows on my macbook (so I can be rid of my HP tower) but I am unsure if I would be safe from viruses. I only use windows for clone dvd/any dvd and nero if that helps.

Can anyone comment on how well Fusion performs in games compared to Parallels? Fusion's been a disappointment (especially after seeing them post all those Team Fortress 2 screenshots in their marketing materials) but is Parallels no better?

OpenGL support (finally!) is nice, though.

Its a bad day when the best news & rumors I've read is about a virtualization program that will let me run Windows on my Mac better than before. I'll be getting the upgrade on day one as I need to be able to run Windows in order to eFile with my tax prep & accounting business.

It's OK, not really impressed to much.

Yes I reinstalled the tools, but it doesn't help. I have integrated graphics :(, doesn't work with Parallels 5 either. :confused:

Ya just violated your NDA, will report. Just kidding :eek: (unless you got it illegally?:D)

I'm liking it, although I'm liking Parallels 5 a bit better. Seems more snappy to me.

EDIT: By the way, what font are you using for Silk on your system? Looks nice.

2007 MBP SR2.2GHz, 8600GT w/128MB, 4GB RAM, W7x64 RC1 (allocated 1536MB & 2 cores), Fusion 3.0.0 build 193526:

Processor = 5.0
RAM = 4.5
Graphics = 2.9
Gaming Graphics = 3.3
HDD = 6.4

Don't have a BC installation so can't give a comparison to native, but that should be easy to find. Not in the beta, got it from the VMware guys at work.

I didn't agree to anything... so sue me... :D

I don't use Silk. It is a port of Titillium for Snow Leopard.

If you want it see link. If you are using Silk revert to LucidaGrande before install. Back up LucidaGrande before you install font. Then just delete LucidaGrande font from Protected and System folders. Then copy Titillium into both of the folders. Folder links included in file. Logout.

Note: Titillium is named LucidaGrande in zip file for system recognition.
