because vmware is really bad about not adding support for new OS releases into their older versions

like ANY version below 4.1.3 refused to launch in 10.8
imagine if they had done the month before thing when releasing 4.x (Sep 2011), suddenly in April 2012 you were looking at buying new in less than a year if you wanted an OS upgrade

unknown if this becomes the case for 10.9 also, their host/client support resources aren't current

why would they add support to work on a new OS? that's a lot of work they aren't going to be paid for

I don't think you're cheap, it seems like only yesterday I updated to Fusion 5. This annual payment hike is tiresome

Are you also tired of the annual payment hike for OS X or are you only tired of the annual payment hike for third party software like VMWare Fusion...?

It's expensive to live in Apple land. I think everybody knows that by now.

Why isn't virtualbox a real option? I've never used it, just curious.
Currently using Parallels and VirtualBox
I think it's a real option, not sure why it gets overlooked most of the time. VB is not as fast and is a bit 'kludgyer' than Parallels but it works fine for most things. It runs as an enclosed virtual system in a window. Parallels has all sorts of slick integration into the MacOS so you can access Windows apps from the Mac side without having to have the virtual environment in the front. The USB integration on VB is a bit flaky though.

Depends on what you want to do. I like VB when I'm just using a throwaway test environment. Copy the Virtual Hard Drive File, fire it up, mess around with it till it's all screwed up, then trash the file and make a clean copy. I think Parallels might be better for using apps that aren't Mac compatible. I use Parallels for my Windows Remote Desktop sessions access the servers I admin.

Without OpenCL, I'm only interested in 12 GiB VMs on MBP. Is it possible now ?

Why is that, out of curiosity. I admin tons of Servers - Windows and otherwise, and JumpDesktop (in MAS) is about as good as I could ask for. Incredibly stable, very high quality RDP/VNC client. Even works with most of the esoteric functions these days.

Mix that with Viscosity VPN software and OmniGraffle Pro and I barely boot my Fusion images any longer.

What are you talking about? Unlike windows, OS X gets cheaper to upgrade every release.

If anybody wants to get a taste of virtualization without paying for software, I'd highly recommend Oracle's VirtualBox.
I haven't used VMWare so I have no comparison there, but I used to use Parallels every day until I discovered VirtualBox. Now I use VB exclusively.

One of the most time-consuming tasks with a VM is restoring a session, and under Parallels this would take close to half a minute. But on the same machine VirtualBox can restore a session in the same OS in about 8 seconds or less.

Runtime performance of VB is also very good, though I've not done formal benchmarking.

Flexiblity, ease of use, and compatibility with most recent Win and Linux versions also favor VirtualBox for me.

Many people think that free software must be cheap in its craftsmanship as well, but everything from Webkit to Darwin and a hundred other examples shows that's not the case. Free software uses a different development model, but not necessarily a cheaper one.

If you like the VM you use, by all means keep enjoying it. But if you haven't tried VirtualBox in a while, you may be pleasantly surprised.

You are not alone. They are working on it now:

Thanks, it seems like they have a lead on the problem. I uploaded the log anyway. I've been considering a move to Parallels considering that they seem to promote more detail improvements such as features and performance numbers. While Fusion just says, faster. I have Geek Bench ready to go, and the before tests all done for 32 bit and 64 bit (windows 7 64 bit). Can't wait to post results of the Geek Bench from Fusion 5 to 6.

I installed it, it replaced VMWare Fusion 5. It crashes each time it attempts to launch. I restarted. will reinstall now. I don't have a list of things to try, to fix it.

Here's how I fixed it:
1. Uninstalled it by dragging "VMWare Fusion" folder to the trash.
2. Restart machine
3. Delete preferences folder "/Library/Preferences/VMware Fusion"
4. Empty trash
5. Re-installed Fusion 6

I switched from VirtualBox to Fusion because it would not support AVX.

I'm done with Parallels, having to upgrade every year just to support the lates os versions and for no real functional improvement is getting old and support for older versions is non-existent. :(

Way to turn this thread about people using Windows into a complaint about Apple.

Parallels is worse. Seems to be an industry thing.

Im pretty sure it wasnt a complaint. Just stating a fact.

Actually you don't really need to be upgrading, I've tried the earlier version of VMWare Fusion and It runs Windows perfectly fine on Mavericks..

Do you know if Fusion 4.1.4 works on Mavericks? I hardly ever use Windows anymore so don't really want to buy the upgrade if it can be avoided.
