I'm using virtualbox because... well.. it's free.
the GUI elements might not look good on the retina at the moment, but the VM itself (in my case WinXP) looks good.

out of curiosity, d00d, what headaches has parallels 7 caused you? my biggest issues with parallels 7 has been my keyboard/input abilities between osx and windows will stop working on one or the other OS and i'll have to end up suspending/starting parallels again.
Specifically 7? None, because I gave up a couple paid upgrades ago. When I was trying/using it, I had problems when using it on my Boot Camp disk. It continually triggered Windows registration and there were a few updates quite a while back that caused strange behaviors. Fusion has always been rock solid.

Question, in Parallels I set the resolution to 2880x1800 just live I have in my actual bootcamp windows install (with DPI set to 175%) and it looks like crap compared to my native install. Not sure why. My native install looks clear as day but the VM running off the exact same install is aliased like crazy.

I just recently switched from VMWare Fusion over to Parallels. The main reason is that graphics switching is handled properly in Parallels whereas VMWare Fusion doesn't support it at all.

The other big factor was how soon they were able to implement support for the Retina MBP.

It's part of the Cult of Mac iStack bundle going on right now also :D

OMG thanks for the tip! it's only 49.99$ and other software is included too.. almost missed it!

if anyone else needs parallels ...

do you know if we are able to re-download and install parallel after the 60 days? like if i were to re-format the computer

"If I buy the bundle today, can I download my apps later after I get my new Mac?
Yes, as long as it’s within 60 days of your purchase. You’ll be able to access all of your license codes, download links, and installation instructions right in your account."

8 Gb or 16 Gb

For those who are using either Fusion or Parallels on your rMBP and have 8 Gb RAM do you find your system slow or sluggish? Trying to decide if I really need to upgrade to a 16 Gb RAM.

I'm hoping 8 Gb is enough.

It works fine for me with 8 GB. I just make sure I don't have a huge number of tabs open in Safari before I launch Parallels.

Depends on what you assign to the VM and what you do on the VM. Assuming a 50/50 split on both RAM and workload, 8GB is definitely workable, but if you're doing moderate work on both OSX and the VM, you'll get pageouts. ML itself just barely gets by on 4GB for all but the very lightest use. I went with the upgrade to 16GB, give both the VM and OSX 8GB and NEVER get pageouts.

If you go with VMWare over Parallels, the savings will pay for half the upgrade to 16Gb and the sale of your 2x4 GB sticks on CL could probably pay for the other half.
