iPod touch Voice Calling Recommendations

Hi,

I got my son an iPod touch for Christmas, and I'd like for him to be able to call his mom (who has an iPhone) and me (I have a Droid) or his grandparents (Droids) or either of our home or work numbers (land lines).

What's the best setup to be able to accomplish this? Google Voice? Skype? Facetime?

We'd also like to be able to send and receive text messages with him.

Textfree with voice, its in app sore #3 free app, or skype I hope they will update it with video for iPod touch 4 or iPhone 4, Facetime. ( they all good)
