Are there any attachments that work with the iphone, or programs that can be run on the iphone to make it usable to recorder class lectures?

vNotes, its a native app that sits right on the springboard. It saves files in amr so they are pretty small. The app also allows you to send your voice recorded notes to an email addy. You'll have to use install app or jailbreak and scp or ftp it to your phone. I suggest install app it's painless.

is the iphone mic + vnotes sufficient to record lectures at a decent quality? What is the typical size of 1 hour of recording?

amr files are pretty compressed, I'm guessing, but I would suspect that a hour wouldn't be more than a few mbs. The quality of the recordings is definitely more than sufficient for lectures.
