    I've been waiting for background support hoping that it would then make sense to start using VoIP apps with the iPhone.

    What's still unclear to me though is whether or not receiving calls is possible while the phone is asleep.

    Will the phone ring if someone calls a VoIP number? What apps, if any, can truly act as a fully functioning second line? Thanks for any recommendations.

    Here is the setup I am fine tuning:

    SIP Phone app: free incoming for SIP calls (I use Google Voice w/ Gizmo). The app just yesterday was updated with iOS4 support which I am in the process of testing.

    Skype: outgoing calls for $3/month. I think it will have better call quality than SIP, but testing as well. Also finally the caller ID can be setup as your Google Voice number.

    And lastly, I am using Google Voice + BeejiveIM + GVMax.com for my text messages.

    This may seem like alot of trouble, but this is the holy grail. I am doing this all on my iPhone with a $30 unlimited data package from AT&T! No voice plan, no sms plan, and no tax. $30 flat.

    Carriers: welcome to the New World as your lot in life is to be a dumb pipe.

    Skype: works on iPhone, but not in the background to answer calls
    Nimbuzz:
    works intermittently for incoming Skype calls (disconnects from Skype server from time to time, at times for a long while, like a day;
    SIP with Callwithus as provider (unbelievable long distance prices, like 7 to 10 cents to UK mobile). I use Callwithus DID local number as incoming for DID calls and for busy/unavailable/no answer/forwarding number for my cell number. This way I can disable my cellular service and Nimbuzz rings for all my calls. Unfortunately, dry G3 service (no voice service) is not available in Canada as far as I know, thank you CRTC and your sugar daddy monopoly charges.

    Nimbuzz under iOS 4 rings when the phone is asleep and locked; can answer incoming call without unlocking. Battery life sucks though. :mad:
