It seems that the bottom part of the screen freezes up when I am on a "now playing" screen, or on the keyboard. This means I can't change the volume without double-clicking the home buttom. It also means I can't space, enter periods, enter numbers, or even press search when on safari and youtube.

Any idea whats wrong? My volume limit and sound check are both off, if those matter at all.

There's been reports by users on here that they've had their iPod/iPhone's screen lose sensitivity on parts of the screen. Im guessing this is what might have happened to your iPod. I suggest contacting Apple Care or going to the Genius Bar if there's an Apple store near you. You should be able to get it replaced with no problems.
