So the metallic volume strip on the left hand side of my 3G just came unglued. I can take it off at will now. Hopefully it will stay in if I don't mess with it, but I don't know for sure. So I tried to go to my local apple store last night to get it exchanged and somehow my little water detection strip under the dock has turned red. I honestly don't remember spilling anything on it but apparently it got wet at some point. Anyway, the apple genius said there was nothing he could do. As soon as that thing turns color, the warranty is void. Any ideas of how to either fix this or get this thing exchanged?

I called Apple's support line and they said that if I paid $29, they would put a hold on my credit card and go ahead and ship me out a new phone. That way I could ship mine back and I wouldn't be without a phone for a few days. I'm wondering if they will see that strip and try to charge me the full price for a phone.

On a side note, does anybody know what the original color of that strip was? Just out of curiosity, I'm assuming green, but idk.

    Wirelessly posted (David's Black 16GB iPhone 3G: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5G77 Safari/525.20)

Apple will see that the water strip is set off. The original color of the indicatior is red. Sometimes the little suckers can get set off by humidity! You might as well try sending it into a place like iResQ who may be able to replace/reglue the piece back in. I am not to sure but I'm guessing if it's just glued in that you could probably dab some Crazy Glue (or other very liquidy glue) on it and you may be able to fix it yourself. Can some other readers please confirm or deny my therory? Please wait for some confirmations before you go ahead with this!

They will not fix it if the sensor is red, they will send it back to you and charge for the new one.
I glued the silent switch back on myself and then sent it in for some other issues I had already talked with Apple in order to getit exchanged.

Sounds bad!! I'm not really sure there's anything you can do except explain to them that you didn't spill anything on it if that's the truth. Post pics before you get it replaced!!

Yeah, I told the guy at the Apple store that I didn't spill anything on it but he didn't seem to care. Oh well, I probably can glue the piece back on. I guess i was just kinda pissed that my warranty is void now.

That's because so many people actually do get their phones wet and try to deny it to a genius. Now, people who don't recall getting it wet or didn't even get it wet at all can't get a replacement.

There is another in the 30 pin connector at the bottom of the iPhone. I always have to laugh when I am in the Apple Store and see a Genius looking down the heaphone jack with a scope. It just looks too funny!:p:p:p

Yeah, my headphone jack one is fine. But the one under the dock connector is pink, that's what voided the warranty. I'm seeing reports all over forums about people's sensors that got tripped but never had any water spills or anything. There has to be something that can be done.
