After yesterdays update to TV OS16 I am no longer able to control system volume with the iPad or iPhone Apple tv remote. This worked fine the day before. I can still control system volume with the actual Apple tv remote but not the ios remotes. Must be an issue with this update. Anyone else?

When running tvos16b on one apple tv, my iphone and ipad running 15.6.1 would not control volume. Now that my ipad is running 15.7 and my iphone is running 16.0, they can control the volume of both my apple tv‘s running 16.

Did you check the Volume Control setting under Remotes & Devices? It's possible after a reboot for the update, CEC isn't working (it should say Auto via HDMI). If it doesn't, then you might need to reboot your tv and Apple TV.

I'm having a similar issue. My lock screen volume up and down buttons disappeared since the update and have been replaced with a nonfunctioning volume slider. However, if I open the actual remote on my iPad and iPhone, I can use the hardware volume buttons to change the TV volume.

I had the same thing, which I thought was due to the remote 'forgetting' the volume up/down commands from the amp. Eventually (after trying to re-learn them and rename them multiple times) I set the option (which commands to use) back to Auto and everything worked again.

Figured out the solution. Go in the home theater controls on ATV settings and turn off/on the settings.
This looks like an actual bug as opposed to a setting problem. I toggled the Remotes & Devices-Home Theater Control-Control TVs & Receivers Off and On. Now it will control the volume of my stereo from the ATV Remote app on my phone while in any menu on any app. As soon as I start a video the functionality is lost. The Mute button still works while video is displaying so Remote can still communicate to the receiver, just not the phone's volume buttons. If I exit the video I can change the volume. The physical Siri ATV remote still adjusts volume the whole time without issue.

Having the same issue, all devices on 16. Now locksreen volume doesn’t work. Don’t recall this happening when running betas on phone but 15 on Apple TV. Perhaps an Apple TV iOS 16 bug.

I just updated an apple tv to tvos 16.1 (a big mistake as to volume control). I got it working again but i had to reset the apple tv completely and then had to toggle earc to arc and back to earc on my Lg CX TV Amongst a number of apple tv reboots. This is a mess. I have an open case with apple on this and have submitted logs and added multiple info updates.

Once its up, it continues to work until one updates to the next 16.1 update where this process starts all over again.

Same problem as well. Volume was working today on the Apple TV remote and now it doesnt work, but still turned tv on/off. Also, it will not learn the remote for my LG OLED. Annoying!

EDIT: I unpaired my remote and when it re-paired it was working again. Held TV and volume down for about 5-10 seconds. Message popped up that remote was unpaired. Once it connected again volume was working!

I just installed beta 2 yesterday. Unpairing my devices and repairing them seems to fix it. All unnecessary steps really. I have bug reports submitted and add info as i learn things.

I had the same issue and what fixed it for me was going to Settings on the Apple TV, and then there was a red notification on a User profile. Follow the prompts and that was it. Seemed like a longer than normal process, so be patient. Prompted me to log into my Apple ID as well. Afterwards, volume worked fine with the iPhone volume controls and the television audio device

I had same issue after IOS 16 installed on iPhone and Apple TV 4K. Fixed it by going into the Audio/Video settings on the ATV4K and making sure the physical Apple TV remote was “connected”. As soon as it connected the volume feature appeared on the virtual remote on the iPhone.

As crazy as this might sound, I think I figured it out.

I tried the following:

Unpair iPhone from Apple TV
Unpair Apple Remote from Apple TV
Reboot Apple TV

Solution: open the Apple TV remote on iPhone and hit the physical volume up and down buttons on the left of your phone to control volume.

I agree 100% this was better in iOS15 and I hope they bring back the virtual volume up and down buttons. For now, that is what I was able to come up with.

The tvOS 16.1 beta that was released today fixed my problem of not having the volume control buttons on the lock screen.

- Rebooted iPhone
- Rebooted Apple TV
- Renamed Apple TV and selected it in remote app
- Turned volume control off and on, rebooting between
- Unpaired / reset remote (TV + volume down)

Nothing has worked with my Samsung Q870. I don’t know if updating iOS or tvOS broke volume control on my iPhone but I can no longer control my ATV’s volume via my iPhone’s physical volume buttons. The ATV remote still works fine though.

Edit: interacting with Siri on the ATV via iPhone still works though.

Ok here’s what worked for me. My issue was my volume control was not working on iOS remote on either my phone or my wife’s with the side buttons (iOS 16.0 and 15.7 respectively). My Apple TV 4K is on 16.0. The Apple TV remote volume control was working. Me setup is Apple TV > marantz AVR > Vizio tv. Was all working fine before tvOS 16.0.

The “home theater controls” did nothing for me. What did work is this: on Apple TV, settings, remotes and devices, other devices, remote app and devices, select my iPhone, forget this device then re-pair it using the instructions on the screen.

These controls have mostly disappeared on my two iPhones and iPad Pro. They intermittently show up and function, only to disappear again moments later. Toggling HDMI-CEC did nothing, and upon removing my devices from Remote App and Devices, I’m not prompted to add them back. (One device wasn’t even listed.) They still function as remotes despite having been removed.
