I've added a bunch more details in my post #21 above, so that those with only "Home Theater" HomePods could see how this Apple ID glitch can occur and is resolved, as the cause might not be as evident if you don't have multiple rooms with OG HomePods.

So this bug had gone away for a few weeks for me and it came back this morning after I had to restart my network. I’m not sure if that caused it or testing a couple of different Siri voices.
Quitting the music app on the Apple TV solved it but it would come back when I used the HomePods for music. What seems to have fixed it was playing music on the AppleTV directly. Now when the tv is off but I ask for music and then stop it the volume lights turn off again.
I have no way to be sure this is what fixed it but it’s something to try.

Yeah that’s what I was thinking. I didn’t mess with the voices on my end though. Just asked Siri what time it was.
I tested it this morning and asked Siri the weather and the lights stayed off. It’s a weird bug that doesn’t seem to affect everyone or is something that not everyone will notice.

Right, it’s not all the time for me either. It happened that one time with a Siri command but other media related stuff does as well and it’s intermittent.

I don’t necessarily mind the volume lights staying on. They’re really dim and I have a hard time noticing it. The only thing that really concerns me is longevity of the HomePod since it seems to be warmer than usual when this occurs. Those lights I’m assuming are LED so it shouldn’t cause the heat that it does.

I think the heat comes from the fact that they are awake. I think that when the lights are on the HomePods are processing something. Seems like they get stuck in a “waiting for a song to play.”

I don't think the + - issue happening is dependent on the type of command (music, weather, general questions), but rather how the command is initiated. Thus, giving a command directly to a "Home Theater" HomePod that is connected to an AppleTV appears to confuse its dual role and cause the + - to stay lit (perhaps the HomePod(s) are having trouble reconnecting back to the Apple TV after someone gave them direct commands and the + - staying lit indicates they are stuck trying). However, if all commands are initiated through the Siri Remote then all remains well. Indeed using the Siri remote to give a command after the + - glitch occurs as angelofioren suggests in post #27 may serve to reinitiate the HomePod's connection to the AppleTV and resolve the issue as well.

It is the switching of the connection method that appears to trip OG HomePod up.

I have this exact problem. Not only are the volume lights stuck on, but the HomePods (stereo pair connected to Apple TV) get quite warm as well.

I tried force quitting the Music App and restarting the Apple TV. The lights are off for now when I turned off the Apple TV, but I’ll keep monitoring to see if it changes.

Glad I found this thread as this was driving me crazy.

This issue returned for on at least two HomePods whenever I ask Siri to play music. A reboot of the AppleTV turns the lights off temporarily until music is played again. Thinking about removing the HomePods as the default audio until Apple has a solid fix. Getting annoying.

I have found that I need to start playing music on the AppleTV first after quitting the app. Once you do that you can ask Siri again and the lights will turn off. I agree that it’s really annoying.

I just removed all my HomePods from the AppleTV default audio, unpaired my stereo HomePods and unplugged them from power. All this chatter about the HomePods overheating and bricking got me nervous. Mine are not under warranty anymore and even if they were, who knows how many Apple retained for warranty replacement. Love the product so I’m trying to keep them working as long as possible. Hopefully Apple has an answer for this in the next update. It’s almost as if Apple is committing HomePod genocide to remove them from existence and not have to worry about them anymore lol.

Here's a poll I'm running on Reddit to gauge how widespread this issue is. Caveat of course is that most people go to support forums only if they have issues, even still this isn't as widespread as reported:
