iPod touch volume/sound icon stays on display

My son's ipod touch is permantly displaying the sound/volume icon on the screen. This has only happened since it wa used in a docking station at xmas, it worked perfectly up until then. Any ideas how to get it off the display. Thanks

Turning it on and off, part of my screen was unresponsive once, this fixed it.

So turn off and on.

Restore it through iTunes?
