iPod touch Volume Up Buttons Acts As Lock

I've got a 3rd gen 8gb and it's recently been using both the sleep button and the volume up button to lock the iPod. Why?

Also it sometimes turns itself off when I lock it then bring the screen back up using the sleep button. Again, why?

Liquid damage is likely the culprit. Check out your headphone water indicators. If they're red, then water's been in your ipod. If the water just got into the volume cables, then the headphone water indicator might not be activated
