Quoted both for truth and for political irony...

No irony in this case, US is not a free country regarding Apples dictatorship related to how 2g/3g cellular networks can be used. This should be left to the carriers in each country and not to Apple and AT&T to decide for the rest of the world.

If this is true, Apple please allow us to USE 2g/3g now, please! It's NOT your problem if there will be congestion in my network, my carrier will handle this.

Vongage NOT to be trusted

CAVEAT CAVEAT

Vonage is THE #1 worst most horrible company I've ever had the extreme displeasure of dealing with.

I won't bore you with the details, but it took me over a year and countless hours on the phone to get out of my contract with them.

Their customer service is ABYSMAL

This is amazing! More and more VOIP apps are being allowed into the app store! Fring, Skype, and now Vonage along with many more to come. In a short press release today, Vonage announced that Apple had approved their VOIP app for the App Store

Horse feathers. If you do not wish to use an Apple product, don't buy one. There is no "dictator" forcing you into a contract, a device, or any toy.

Basically, you are upset that you cannot have the toy you want in the flavor you want today. Therefore, you are slinging all the naughty words you can, that Apple is a "dictator", and because of Apple and AT&T, you and your entire nation are not "free".

You are free to choose any toy you wish. None of them are magical, and nothing is perfect.

I just spoke with a Vonage sales agent about the Vonage iPhone app, and boy do I hope she was misinformed about some of the details:

1) It is not tied to your existing Vonage account. It isn't Vonage Companion for your iPhone and isn't associated with your existing Vonage number. You don't even need to be an existing Vonage customer or have an existing Vonage phone number to use the Vonage iPhone app.

2) The Vonage iPhone app will be geared/marketed towards the international traveler, allowing cheap international calls to be made over a WiFi connection. This would be something that competes with the cheap or prepaid long distance calling cards/service.

3) There will be more info provided to the public at the end of September.

Again, I hope she was wrong about it not being tied to your existing Vonage phone number for incoming and outgoing calls. Yikes! If this is true, perhaps they don't want their iPhone app competing with the $9.99 a month Vonage Companion softphone.

Vonage, please don't disappoint us!!!

voange is an excellent service and i have had it for years - never again will i own a true landline for telephone use (some security systems require a landline but the cheapest rate is only about $6 per month with no other features than local calling for the security system)...

okay, this would be a terrible version of the vonage app and really cause tons of people to be upset - what a waste if this is true. although it would make more sense with apple's app regulation and policies.

I haven't had a single problem with Vonage. two lines with them and all is good in my house, and while i am on the road. though i do wish that the Iphone APP would allow for vonage calls over 3g.

TruPhone ... anyone ever hear of it?
Its available for a long time in the Canadian APP store and allows free iPhone to iPhone calls over VOIP. They've been around just about as long as Skype has but previously only for S60 platform nokia devices.

Truphone -- used to be a favorite of mine when I used a Nokia. iPhone version still doesn't support the speakerphone and they are blaming apple for it (even though every other SIP/voip app supports the speaker...). Also, their service pricing is no longer competitive. They have turned into a standard telecom now.

Vonage -- have to agree with the "worst customer service" comment. Although for basic calling everything was fine for the year I used it but using a softphone app at the time didn't work and they continued to charge me $10 a month after a year of discontinuing it, calling them every month, etc. Finally just had to give up and they kept over $100 they owed me. Never to return...no matter what.

iSIP or SIPPhone -- worked for a few days. crashed a lot, and haven't been able to get it to work again. Very irritating is when you select the number to dial and it can't connect, you get no message or anything. The number just becomes unhighlighted again. For an app that costs money, inexcusable.

Acrobits Softphone -- This is what I use today. Use it with Broadvoice and Gizmo. Not perfect but when it works well it is great. The push notification works most of the time (not all) and it is easy to switch between the service you want to use. Main issues are echo (which is probably also related to the network, etc) and lots of calls get initiated but neither party can hear the other one once it is answered--seems to be happening more and more with Gizmo (maybe something to do with Google...)
