Cut 1" off either side of a 16:9 tablet and it is 2" narrower and proportionately lighter - a useful reduction in size. Sure, you now have a smaller screen, but because 4:3 is a more useful shape, the impact of the loss of space is reduced.

A 16:9 non-mini iPad would either be the same width and, therefore, have a substantially smaller screen, or be an inch or two wider & therefore substantially bigger.

I want a bigger iPad.
Said it time and time and time again.
From the moment I unpacked my iPad and saw small it looked in my large hands, compared to how it looked on screen)I wished it had been larger as I thought it was going to be.
For a small child the iPad probably seems really big. For a grown adult male it's pretty small.

I'm Against having a 16:9 iPad screen. Not too long ago I thought that it would be amazing to have a widescreen. But I've come to realize that the current iPad has just about the best shape for the many possible needs of different applications, and uses.
The iPad may be used for watching videos. But for an overall experience it's best the way it is....

I want a bigger iPad.

As long as it is 4:3 not 16:9.

However, I think weight would be a killer - and even if they could turn out a larger iPad without increasing the weight, the larger size means that the centre of gravity is further away from your hand, so more torque on your wrist!

AFAIK the current trend is that smaller tablets are doing better than larger ones (although that may be because they are cheaper).

Well put. I like the logic of what you are saying and I agree.

What a biased poll!!! Apple has voted against 16:9 in the iPads they released. This crowd will overwhelmingly go with whatever Apple says or does.

For a followup, why don't you poll: windows vs. OS X? or iPhone vs. Android? You'll get the exact same lack of objectivity.

And OP, were you expecting something different with this poll? Even you were biased in post #1.

What's your view/opinion of a 16:9 iPad display?

It's great for video, but what else can you think of? You could change some opinions like mine if there are other good attributes you could bring my attention to :) i really would like to learn something new #

I know' it's kinda pointless, but it's always fun to have polls to make note of for the future.

For me, yes, the iPad weight is an issue, but it's way, and I mean WAY to heavy now to use used one handed for any length of time, it will be years and years (decades?) before they could reduce anything the size of the iPad to the weight needed for long term one hand holding on on one side comfort, so hey, if you are going to have to use 2 hands anyway, why worry about a few more ounces?

, so hey, if you are going to have to use 2 hands anyway, why worry about a few more ounces?

I don't thiink weight is the most critical issue here. Take a cardboard and cut it in the size of a tablet you want. Then take the same cardboard and cut it in the size of the current iPad. Carry them around for a while, pretending that you are using them like you would a real tablet. Being cardboard cutouts, the weight difference should be neglible, yet the larger size cutout would be more awkward to handle, just from the size difference.

I don't always agree with Apple but I absolutely love that they don't follow the industry with these super widescreen displays which everyone always touts as being sooo good for movie watching as if no one could ever possibly want to do anything else but watch widescreen movies on their laptop or tablet grrr...

16:10 on laptops >>>> 16:9

4:3 on tablets > 16:10/16:9 on tablets and this is coming from someone who loves android. So annoyed I can't get a good android tablet with 4:3 aspect ratio.

See my previous post - given that you typically hold a tablet by the edge, with one hand, using the other hand to operate it, the distance from your hand to the centre of gravity of the tablet is important. A larger tablet puts your hand at a mechanical disadvantage...

I

I agree with the principle.

However, I've been looking at an iPad 3 alongside a Galaxy Note 10.1 (comparing the size is a piece of string, but they're both firmly in the "full size tablet" class) - and I think the problem is exacerbated by poor/generic design on Android/Samsung.

In landscape mode, the note screen is about 20mm wider than the iPad, but the iPad screen is 14mm higher.

Then, Android eats 8mm of that space with the control bar, c.f. 5mm for the iPad's status bar (worse, the android controls are at the bottom of the screen and quite easy to press by mistake - you're 'reaching over' them all the time to get at the app - particularly annoying when you're using the on-screen keyboard.

Pop-up the Samsung keyboard, and its 72mm vs. 68mm on iOS - OK, Samsung squeezes in number keys (which is nice) and an autocomplete bar (which is not nice - iOS does autocomplete without needing a 9mm bar permanently on screen) - but at the expense of smaller keys than the iPad's nearly-full-size ones.

If you then look at specific software - Samsung's S-Note uses up another 17mm in status/icon/menu bars. With the on-screen keyboard popped up you are left with a mere 28mm height of "canvas" showing. That's partly Samsung's bad - in Polaris Office you get a less ridiculous 45mm of vertical canvas - but compare that with 64mm in iPad's Notepad or Pages (even allowing for all the soon-to-be-removed faux leather and torn paper).

Of course - you can use Android in portrait mode, but I've just measured it and, somehow, with the keyboard up, you still only get 127mm (in Polaris office) or 110 (in s-note) vertical space, c.f. 130mm in Pages on the iPad.

I don't know how much of this is Android and how much is Samsung - the control bar is standard Android, but I suspect that the S-note issues arise from it being designed for large-screen smartphones like the S4 and Note 2 - portrait operation and chunky buttons needed. Overall, the problem is that Android is still weak on software tailored specifically for tablet use.

What's your view/opinion of a 16:9 iPad display?

It's great for video, but what else can you think of? You could change some opinions like mine if there are other good attributes you could bring my attention to :) i really would like to learn something new

My "view" is that had Apple rolled out the original iDevices and all since as 16:9 with the same Apple marketing spin that makes the crowd believe that ever "thinner" is some fantastic benefit (even as functional guts start coming out to make room for more thin- though the price doesn't fall with the loss of utility), these poll results would very much be the other way. This same crowd argued "720p is good enough" when Apple seemed to agree but then quickly dropped that belief as soon as Apple embraced 1080p in iDevices and :apple:TV3. PowerPC was far superior to Intel right up until Apple decided that Intel was better, spun it that way, and then this crowd flip-flopped on the mainstream (whatever Apple thinks) arguments to go with that (new) flow. iSight in an iPad made no sense at all in iPad 1 (the vast majority of this crowd ridiculed it as "stupid", "99% doesn't want or need..." and so on), right up to iPad 2 with "FaceTime" and then it became "shut up and take my money", "best iPad ever", "can't wait to Facetime with my new iPad". Who would want an iPod with video as Apple ridiculed right up until Apple rolled out iPod with Video and then the crowd swung right with Apple. And on and on.

The existing screen ratio is best because that's what Apple chose. Much like the 3.5" iPhone screen was "perfect" right up until Apple chose to make it larger. And when there were only rumors of a taller-but-not-wider iPhone screen, it was "stupid", "fragmentation", "Apple would never", "monstrosity", etc right up until the rumor started seeming very likely. Then, it became "starting to grow on me", "wait & see". Then, out rolls the completely new screen- taller but not wider- and it was "shut up and take my money", "best iPhone ever", etc.

16:9 would have been fine (here) if Apple had chosen to endorse it. If they choose to endorse it in the next models of iDevices, it will be "best iPad ever", "shut up and take my money", etc. As usual, the crowd works very hard to come up with every possible spin of rationale- logical or illogical, rational or irrational- to support whatever Apple chooses to do.

If the purpose of a poll is to get some objective views, it needs to be approached objectively. This one might as well be windows vs. OS X, android vs. iOS, and so on. If the purpose of a poll is to get a bunch of people to vote with whatever Apple thinks, this one is right on target.

Personally, I find the iPhone 5's screen size usable but annoying. I do think it is the best iPhone ever and I did run out and buy it the moment it went on sale, but that is because of all the other things besides the screen size. The screen size is okay for apps, many of which were redesigned to take advantage of the extra space, and when browsing casually, but whenever I try to read something long, it annoys me, because either orientation don't feel quite right. Turn it portrait and it doesn't feel comfortable in my hand, turn it landscape and the line is too long, with too many words per line.

My preference for a tablet, which I consider a media consumption device and on which I generally watch video content, is 16:9 because I despise unused real estate. That said, I understand that the resolution dependence of iOS means that if one of the devices, say the full-size iPad, has a 4:3 ratio, which it does, then the mini has to maintain the same ratio so that everything scales properly.

16:9 works a lot better on a phone than it does on a tablet. Just look at all the large tablets, to me they seem far too long and thin in portrait.

Yes, but most people use their tablets in landscape mode.

Over the years I have seen a number of surveys of a variety of forums and every single time, the vast majority of people answer that they use their iPad in landscape most of the time.

That's just what users have reported.

Seems rather dubious. I use my iPad in portrait almost always. And I really mean it.

16.9 got it's ass kicked in the voting, can't argue with those results :D

Or course it dig, because Apple don't make the iPad in a wider format.
If they did, this poll would be totally different, or do your doubt that?

I think we are accepting a 16:10 would be preferable on all devices, even PC monitors than 16:9

I think two thirds of the apple buyers are like that.

Like i said. I like 16:9 widescreen. But I have used it on tablets and only like it for video. The vast majority of people don't use tablets for only video. Many browse the Internet and documents, or play games and also watch movies etc.
So I think most negativity is from the browsing experience you get with a 16:9 screen in the landscape orientation currently.

Personally I really got quite frustrated when browsing in landscape with 16:9 and dread it on my iPod Touch 5 as well.

Also. Unless Apple increased the screen into a 16:9 ratio, they would probably just end up narrowing the screen in the portrait position potentially.

My point is: The iPad wouldn't be as well balanced between the different tasks, as well as Physically in the hand or hands. Mine our pretty big, so I go with (Hand) :) personally.

This is only my opinion. I like your as well.

DIFFERENT OPINIONS ARE AWESOME # I'm happy you shared. I like understanding others better.. Thanks......

Those are not scientific polls.

And anyway, ISO 216 was specifically designed with orientation change in mind.

lol, you are amazing :p

Numerous polls on numerous forums, and because you don't like the results that are repeated time and time again by actual fellow mac users, it's deemed worthless as it's "unscientific"

I presume if the results all said Portrait preferred you would of deemed the many polls to be worthy of proving your point :D

Well, if you don't understand the difference between a poll being statistically worthless, and the worth of opinions in a forum, I have nothing more to say on the subject.

So 100 people write down their opinions and it means something

The same 100 people express the opinion in a poll and it's worthless.

hmmmmmm ok
