We had the letters VPN showing in the toolbar, not the vpn icon. just noticed it once. now is always the icon. What does this mean? Why VPN letters? does this mean that somebody has been using a VPN? Is there any way of telling?

First, post some more information as to which machine (MacBook or MacBook Pro) and operating system you're running. Also, in which toolbar are you seeing the VPN indication? After you do that, report your post by clicking on the exclamation point (to the right of the "Share" button) at the bottom of that post box. A window will pop up. Request that your thread be moved to the appropriate sub-forum. (It doesn't appear that it belongs here. No worries.)

A moderator will be happy to do that so that you'll have a better chance to get assistance.

Is MacBook Pro and almost certainly El Capitan. iOS 10 something. It's the toolbar on the top, the main one, towards the right of the screen. It always shows the icon now, I'd just like to know why that once, months ago,
I noticed the letters VPN up there instead.
