I have tried Private Internet Access and am now trying Nord. The former proved, so far as I was concerned, to have some sort of incompatibility with OSX, and the latter is driving me to distraction by repeatedly requiring me to log in, and then rejecting my details.

Is there a native Apple Macintosh application that I can use instead ? I am obliged to use unsecured networks on most days of every week, and I really do not want to do that without the protection of a VPN,

iVPN.net isn't the cheapest ($100/yr) but I can say that it works really well. Native app with "kill switch", multiple VPN countries, OpenVPN compatibility for iOS and really good speeds. Free trial period.

This website, if you haven't already seen it, has a lot of detail about almost every commercial option out there.

PPTP, IPSec, L2TP over IPSec, OpenVPN, IKEv2 …

The provider probably lists the available protocols somewhere. If you can use OpenVPN, then you should have a look at Viscosity (my personal favourite), Tunnelblick or Pritunl. A more comprehensive solution is Shimo, but it is rather expensive.

I have found it: IKEv2, which Nord says is a highly-effective protocol with which it is at ease. My trouble with Nord must therefore have some other source. Where do I go from there ? Can I download an application that will enable me to use Open VPN so as to try Viscosity or Tunnel Blick ? If so, how easy is that to do ?

Suppose I try to use Apple's native VPN-application. The instructions that I have found at https://support.apple.com/kb/PH21674?locale=en_USI tell me to proceed essentially as follows -- I have indicated with italics the parts that I cannot understand:
  1. Open System Preferences > Network.
  2. Click the + sign.
  3. Select VPN,which we know will be IKEv2.
  4. Enter in your server address and account name, then click Authentication Settings. (What does that mean ? What are "my" server-address and account-name ?)
  5. Enter in your password and shared secret, then click Ok. (Password for what ?)
  6. Click Connect.

Could you just guide me to the directions that you have in mind, please.
