Couple of months ago, I got a HTC vive and tried for days to get it to work with my iMac in bootcamp running windows 10. no dice. I had a USB C to HDMI, tried and tried to make it work, but never got any picture on the Vive except some flashes of light. Contacted support and the first thing they said was to send them a photo of the back of my cpu. I did and they instantly said "sorry, no support for macs". WOuldn't even consider I was running bootcamp (I don't think she knew what it was). Frustrated, I returned it.

But, I would like to get it working and buy one again. Does anyone have experience setting up a Vive on a late 2017 iMac with USB-C? correct converters to HDMI, etc...I have a i7 4.2 GHz processor, 40gb DDR4 ram, and the radeon pro 580 (8gb). More than enough to cover VR.

Anyone? I know it will work, but requires particular cables, etc...I'd love to hear from someone with a similar system how they go it to work.

It seems the Vive now has built in Mac OS support for fcpx and steam VR, have you tried not using it in bootcamp.

What are you using to connect the HDMI cable from the Vive to the iMac? That is probably the weak link as the Vive is supported at least in Beta under High Sierra and per iMore and YouTube you can directly connect it to the 2017 iMac, though the demos are usually done with an AMD Pro 580 in an eGPU box since those cards have HDMI outputs.

I saw this post on Reddit last year that said Plugable's USB-C to HDMI cable works. https://www.reddit.com/r/Vive/comments/6gzgw3/impressions_of_vr_on_new_imac_osx_windows/

Here's a link to the cable on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/Plugable-ThunderboltTM-Supports-Displays-3840x2160/dp/B0727QQLV2 and their product page https://plugable.com/products/usbc-hdmi-cable

I'd love to hear how you get on as I'm considering buying the iMac with Pro 580.

I'm looking for Beta testers for VR Desktop 2, with HTC Vive support.

It's an app that lets you use macOS in VR.

I’ve been running a Rift on my 2017 27” iMac since I got the Rift in August 2016, without issues. Steam VR also works.
There should be no issue running a Vive, I’m pretty certain of that.
The Steam VR compatibility test(which tests the CPU & GPU), places the system more than halfway into the ‘VR Ready’ bracket.

How well does the framerate hold up? Are there any games that don't maintain 90fps consistently?
