A benefit would be if you have blurays but not a bluray reader in your computer.

Anyone actually try to use it yet? I tried on both iOS and android but I can't get it to register. It just says it can't register the barcode as a movie. I've tried multiple movies.

Interesting about the 50% off with 10 or more discs on desktop. I can't see why I would use the iOS method over the desktop method in that case. What's the benefit other than being able to scan more quickly?

Also, I had no idea Vudu wasn't available on AppleTV. That's super annoying. I feel like I'm always forced to own more than one streaming device for this very reason. AppleTV doesn't have VUDU or Amazon Prime. Amazon Fire TV doesn't have VUDU or iTunes purchases. Roku has everything but iTunes purchases. You're forced into owning basically at least 2 devices if you own content or want to watch things on either the Apple platform, VUDU, or Amazon Prime... sucks.

While i understand the business model for this, I can't bring myself to pay again for content I already bought. I should be able to spend a flat fee (or perhaps, frankly, NO fee) to have access to content that I already paid a studio to own.

the proverbial thinking that investment made years ago does not depreciate ... keep holding on to those Betamax.

If Vudu were to ever go out of business, I'm sure someone would step in. I would think it's far to valuable to just dump - they'd probably sell to someone.
Not likely, did anyone pick up the PlaysForSure server and licenses? Those people all lost their paid-for media.

Vudu is great and generally cheaper than Itunes. They are getting better at extras and subtitles. The one area they are light years behind are on other language tracks. On some or most new Itunes releases you get the option of Spanish dubbed or French. This is non existent on Vudu. Also Vudu and Samsung are at odds over 4k so if you own a 4k Samsung tv you cant natively get 4k. Pretty annoying

Oh man, yeah, don't have a way to read any disks on either my laptop or desktop, blu-ray or DVD. Didn't realize that the desktop method of this would require that. Sucks.

I'm talking about Disney and D2D, not Disney providing codes, I realize they do that on all new releases.

Exactly. I appreciate Disney and their Disney Movies Anywhere platform. I would say it probably even encourages me to buy more of their movies than I otherwise would.

That said, I have a ton of older Disney DVDs and even Blu Rays that came out before The Disney Anywhere program, and before Digital Copies period. Even some of their newer releases still don't come with Digital Copies. For example the Lilo & Stitch 2 Movie BluRay collection. I would gladly pay a few dollars to get these movies added to my Disney Movies Anywhere collection, but I'm not going to pay $36 to buy them again in iTunes.

Should the term "digitize" be used when converting alreay digital information to another form(at)?
Only thing here, which is really digitized is that barcode...

My attempt at a free conversion of a DVD failed with a "Location must match billing address". My billing address is correct. Might be an issue with the Postal Database for my location which is incorrect.

Now waiting for Vudu support. I see from a post above that it's not that great. Guess I'll soon see. It's been 24 hours and nada.

Vudu email support is awful. Better if you call them.

Amen to that!

I have previously made this comment, along with the idea that Apple finally join the UltraViolet consortium. That way iTunes would be the primary front-end and we wouldn't need Vudu. :)

Out of my 40-ish movie blurays, only 15 would work with VUDU, 3 or 4 seemed like they should, but did not.
("Should" means looking at some of the on-line lists that say it should be supported but it's not working).

If VUDU supports the TV App on the iOS devices, that would help with the adoption too. I'm not sure if Apple would let it though, I'm not sure if the rules to be qualified as compatible with the "TV" app. If they did, I'd be in. But I'll wait in the meantime.

Ultimately, $25 to upgrade 10 DVDs to Hi-Def digital seems like a pretty good deal to me. The only downsides I can see are that you can only watch them via the Vudu app, making it that much harder to maintain an integrated video library, and that there's no app for Apple TV. Considering how crappy some of my older DVDs look on a 4k TV, I can accept the trade-off.

What do I have to do to get the first 10 at half off? I've seen it mentioned but don't know what to do to implement it.

Nuts. It looks like they've discontinued that discount promotion. I presume it was when they launched this new service. It appears I got in just under the wire. That's a shame, as I doubt I'll bother with any further upgrades if they're $5 each.

Just tried it, and put it about 12 discs. First disc was free, so I used it on my old Iron Giant DVD (as noted DVD to HD is $5). Then I got a whole bunch more BD to Digital HD for $2. It did not accept any Disney codes.

And for those worrying that Vudu might one day go out of business, all the titles I put in showed up in my master Ultraviolet library -- so it's Vudu independent.

Tempting, but still a no.

I just can't shake a feeling that one day Walmart may wakeup in the morning and say "Nah--the digital video content business is just not for us" and then close down VUDU.

I just don't have that worry with iTunes.

If Disney were included (With Disney Movies Anywhere) I'd jump all over this.

Curious-- what if you scanned a barcode of a boxset? Like LOTR trilogy-- would that be $2 or $6?

Scanning TLOTR trilogy brings up a "barcode not recognized" error.

Somewhat related: I just recently learned about sites where you can buy iTunes and other download codes that came with Blu-Rays and have been "donated". The site I used was called "cheapuvcodes.com" It all seemed pretty dodgy to me, but for a few bucks I figured I'd give it a shot -- someone on these forums had pointed out that this kind of business existed, and the prices were great.

Anyway, long story short: I bought a couple iTunes movies and it totally worked. I think I paid $6 for The Revenant with all the iTunes Extras and all that. Not bad!

Yeah there are large communities that sell everything from UV codes to iTunes codes to Vudu credits etc. I have over 1400 Vudu movies and I paid a fraction of the price of buying them full price.

Very cool. Any particular site(s) you recommend?

NOOOOO. I just finished nabbing a cheap-ish blu-ray disk drive and installing it in my PC for this very purpose, running back to my parents' house to finally move my old college DVDs/blurays back to my house, and now it's discontinued???? Well that's extraordinarily demotivating.

Every Disney new release comes with a "Disney Movies Anywhere" code in the box. Enter it online, and you now own that movie on iTunes, Amazon, Google, Xbox, and Vudu, in addition to being able to view it within the Disney Movies Anywhere app. I believe the same applies if you purchase digitally. If I buy a Disney movie on iTunes, it is also added to my account on Amazon, Google, etc.

That's not completely true. Only Disney movies marked with Disney Digital Copy, or now Disney Movies Anywhere, come with a valid download code, and Disney charges a premium for this.

Disney sells Blu-ray and DVD editions of all of their movies without digital codes, and there is no way to upgrade them to the premium version in a manner similar to VUDU D2D. This is especially problematic with smaller films like John Carter, which no longer have 3D editions in print. In order to buy the digital version of John Carter now, you must pay full price for the digital ($19 last I looked) edition on VUDU.

In many cases, most of the Marvel movies required you to buy the 3D version in order to get the code--this has changed with the release of Dr. Strange, but Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man on release required purchase of the 3D edition.
