Am I just looking at the wrong thing? Is the sensor just to the left of the earpiece? If so then I see mine fine- maybe just overly tinted glass on some phones is the problem? Can't be?

Delete this thread if I made a mistake- my apology

are you possibly looking at the front facing camera?

I believe the proximity sensor is right above the earpiece on iP4

The proximity sensor is indeed above the earpiece as the guy above me has stated. It's the front camera you must be referring to.

It turns the screen off when you press your face against it during a call so nothing unintentional is done.

If dumb people get too close to your phone, a beeping starts. It starts off slowly and gets faster the dumber and closer they get.

It's actually to let the phone know when you are on a "call" via the handset to blackout and disable the touch screen.

It's also used with some apps, not just calls I suppose. Like Siri, Google mobile etc.
