Android is actually making very rapid advances. The Galaxy S7 is probably one of the most impressive non-iOS smartphones I've seen in a long time. Many flagship android devices have very high DPI AMOLED displays, larger displays (pre-iPhone 6) come with waterproofing, wireless charging, fast charging, external storage, etc. etc. at very competitive prices.

If Android wasn't succeeding then why are so many people sporting non-Apple phones these days? It's a clear case of competitors coming out with features that customers do care about (large screens is a big one), and if Apple was going for a "let's increase the screen size slowly strategy and prolong our profiteering" then it didn't work.

So do you believe Apple was really trying to profiteering, or were they taking their time to make what they felt was the best device?

This is what I meant by "in spite of" or "as a result of". Regardless of which stance you take, it is the market that decides. You cannot assume that you can limit your upgrades and expect the market to be obedient. Demand will create its own supply.

Well, I'm not making any Android vs Apple comparisons because this is the iPad forum and what's been said so far, is with that in mind.

For the tablet market, android succeeds in the 7"-9" market but at the 10" size, Android is a distant second.

But the phone and tablet markets aren't alike if that's where you're going with this.

I like what Apple did with the 9.7 Pro. Stylus, ambient light, better sound, etc. All cool things. The issue is, the iPad Air 2 already is great. And the 9.7 Pro is expensive, especially when you have to shell out $100 for the stylus to take full advantage of the feature set. Also, the new iPad really should have USB 3.0, and arguably more RAM and cheaper storage cost per GB (all common gripes).

So while the 9.7 Pro is a nice update and a good platform, it costs a heck of a lot, it needs i/o improvement, and it's not orders of magnitude better than the now much cheaper iPad Air 2, which realistically can do a lot of what the Pro can do.

So, should we wait to purchase? Wait for better storage, more RAM, better USB, tweaks, and hopefully a lower price and/or automatically include the stylus in the next update? Or is this foolish thinking and none of these things will come to pass.

As always, it depends on what you need from it and what you're willing to give up.

4Gb RAM ? Maybe wait for the first reviews, because it's entirely possible that 2Gb is enough.
USB 3.0 - I don't really get why they didn't include that, but do you plan on doing a lot of file transfers, and if yes, is USB 2 speed really an issue ? If yes, then I suppose, wait.
Cheaper storage cost - this is Apple, so all you may get is a cheaper overall cost in ... 1 or 2 years ?
Included Pencil - again, this is Apple, so you may get all dried up waiting for that to ever happen.

We always wonder if we should "wait for version 2". But in this case, this is already version 3 for everything except the Pencil support, where it's version 2.

I suppose it's worth it to wait for a limited portion of the population - people who actually need a lot of memory and really fast transfer rates. But these people have a choice between going for the 12" (many of them would probably have a good use for the bigger screen anyway), or wait for an unknown period of time and have none of these things with the Air 2.

For those who don't need really good audio and the Pencil, though, the Air2 is probably a better choice given its price.

Apple is like a great TV show. They consistently leave you wanting more. If a TV show wraps up every loose end mid-season, you won't come back to watch more. The promise of an even better episode next week/month/year is what brings people back.

Apple is selling its show to the general public, who continues to eat it up, year after year. They're not interested in Macrumors fan fiction alternate endings that give everything a tidy ending and make everyone happy. They want cliffhangers. They want to perpetuate lust and greed and drama.

Welcome to Downton Apple.

You can wait as long as you want, mine is on order :)

I wish it had 4GB of RAM, but I cannot wait any much longer. I got rid of my Air 2 and life sucks without it. I read my books on the iPad constantly and the only thing I have left to do so now is my iPhone 6 Plus. I am excited for this new iPad Pro and I cannot wait to get the package!

If you can afford it, stop worrying about it and just get one. Too many people are over thinking their iPad purchases. It's only a tablet, it's not going to change your life. Waiting another year in the hope of the perfect, ultimate iPad is pointless. Order what you can afford now and enjoy using it.

That only works if you buy the base model and you don't sell on ebay or use PayPal. You'll lose a lot more with the higher capacity models especially the 256gb one. Historically you'll never come close to recouping the extra hundreds of dollars on LTE and memory upgrades.

You can do okay with mid level wifi ones. 32 or 64. Just saying its a small price every year or so.

Couldn't agree more with this. There's always going to be something better down the line.

That is not a viable long term strategy. Competitors can enter the market and overtake you quite easily. For proof, you just have to look at the smartphone market...

Apple cannot arbitrarily limit important features without people noticing. People will either notice and care, or not notice and not care. It's just a matter of how many who care or don't care - and if the latter, it just means you're in a minority, noticing things are really aren't important to 99.9999% of customers.

The very fact that people have stuck with the iPad 2 for so long already invalidates your argument.

but, this is the way it has been for decades with apple.. there have been case studies written about it as well
