And I'm pretty sure he has been talking about the MBs and not the MBPs. The only probable updates coming to the MBs are flashbooting, (which the new intel macs boot pretty darn fast already) and official 802.11n.

It's not "Official 802.11n" it's going to be official "Draft 2.0 802.11n"

The full 802.11n specifications aren't due to be ratified until 2008. In all probability it will work with the finalised spec but it won't BE the finalised version, not for over a year yet.

I bought my 1.25GHz PowerBook G4 when Panther was released. A year later came Tiger. I didn't want to waste time with a clean install, so I performed an upgrade as did many many others. However, there were many stability problems after the upgrade, some of which haven't gone away even with the latest 10.4.8.

In retrospect I should have backed up all my data, wiped out the hard drive, and installed a fresh copy of Tiger.

Now with Leopard looming on the horizon, I don't want to buy a new Mac with Tiger only to have to face the same dilemma again with the release of Leopard. If I purchase a new Mac now, I know I will have to spend a couple of weekends to migrate everything from the old system to the new. I would not want to repeat this only 3-4 months later with Leopard.

So because I am in the enviable position of being able to wait, I certainly will.

Next time just do an Archive and Install with the network preferences maintained - it's basically an erase install but all the work is done by the computer and it leaves a folder with all your old preferences and stuff on your machine. If you've got plenty of space it's a good way to go about the install. That way, once you're satisfied the system is working well under the new OS you just delete the "Previous System" folder and you're done.

All your data (docs, music, movies etc.), programs and settings are carried over to the new OS.

I've never understood the argument for waiting to purchase a computer based on the release of a new version of the operating system or the latest & greatest iLife.

If you need the computer, then you buy it.

i agree if u need it now might as well get it now. if u can wait or wanna wait than wait...simple as dat

Buy now, if you wait for anything in the world of tech, you will ALWAYS be waiting, Tiger is Amazingan ,d leopard, to be honest, is cheap anyway, plus you may not even need/want the extra features, buy buy buy

I fell for the Apple experience back in college.
[That was ummmm,,, +10 years ago ]
Became a convert, and spread the gosple of Macintosh to all.
Convinced family members and friends to buy.

Yet, I never bought one.
Because, for years, and years, and years,,, I waited.
The next best thing was right around the next turn of the calendar.
So, I waited some more.
And, I waited.

But, within the next two weeks, a brand new MB midlevel and a refurbed 24" iMac will be delivered to my humble abode.

Why now, and not before?

Reasons:
1. value for the dollar right now is, IMHO, absolutely great...
2. the capability of these machines [after the shock of Intel-inside semi-wore off], again, is absolutely wonderful...
3. I not only can not wait anymore, I am tired of the PC's I have floating around the house, and the desire to acquire what I want and what I need merged with what is available now...
4. and, lastly, specifically, the MB has the C2D chip and the refurbed 24" iMac C2D is at a price that is very attractive...

As to waiting for Leopard - as others have said, Tiger [from what I have read/seen] is a VERY excellent OS, and should be very capable for quite some time. However, one main thought that I have is to always wait for some time after a new OS is out to let the bugs be shaken out by the masses. My patience for things that go burp in boxes is not very great... especially when I can not proactively fix such by a hammer. :p

Short version of the above: buy it when you want, when you can, and when the desired item is at a very attractive level; see https://buyersguide.macrumors.com// :)

Well, I am likely waiting for Leopard before getting my much-longed-for MBP. But my circumstances are different. It is probable that I won't have the money this year, anyway. And I do have my server (a Mini) and my wife's MB to get stuff done.

The differences between now and April in terms of hardware are likely going to be pretty minimal:

* A minor CPU speed bump, but faster = hotter, and Intel doesn't have anything major on the horizon.
* Flash booting...maybe. But this only affects initial boot time. Once you're up and running it makes no difference.
* Bigger screen for the MB? Doubtful, as this is a major point of differentiation between the MBP and MB. And if it did happen, there will be a corresponding price increase. Bigger = less portable.
* Better GPU in the MB...probably. This isn't going to matter much. You'd still be better off with the MBP for game playing.

All told, this isn't anything amazing. The difference between the G4 and Core 2 Duo is much more massive. The new Apple notebooks are infinitely fast from my point of view (having done 3D game development on a Pentium II).

In terms of Leopard and iLife '07, yes, waiting will save you $200 or so. (I didn't realize that the iLife upgrade wasn't part of Leopard, but oh well.) So if it's just money that's the issue, then waiting makes sense. On the other hand, we're already talking about a $1500 notebook, and if you factor in not having it between now and April, well, that's quite a bit of time. Personally, I've been waiting ever since the first MBP was announced, and I finally went ahead and bought a MacBook (non-pro) last week.

Yea... I really want a mac... like badly. I tried my track coaches macbook and I loved it. And now I want one even more... I can't really wait at all.

Hmmm... reading the Limewire/Bearshare thing. Isn't that illegal? haha... and if they find out you get like majorly busted. Or else I would just go along and do it.

Sure in April Santa Rosa is supposed to come out but how long did every wait for C2D Macbooks and Macbook Pros? If I were you I would wait till after MWSF in January and then buy the computer.

I just got a tip from a shop in Europe where me and my friend went to buy Mac OS X Tiger that "OS X Leopard" will be out in January and will cost 129 Euros.:D

I will wait till then to buy my MB.:p

We also heard this "tip" several times about the MBP for 2 months. Every week someone heard that it was coming out the next Tuesday. I hope that it comes out in January, but I'll believe it when I see it.

Yeah I'd agree with that. That's what I'm doing.

I also want a MacBook (that I don't need), but I'll probably wait for MWSF in Mid-January (dates anyone?) before doing anything. By waiting I'll get iLife '07, and a better picture of when Leopard will be released - maybe at MWSF, but probably later and if it's worth it to wait or buy.

it's only illegal if you get caught.
